James Herman Sanders

Mr. James Herman Sanders, age 79, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Monday, April 29. 2024 in Bay Minette, Ala. He was born in Cantonment, Fla. to Norvell Lee and Rosa Lee King Sanders.  He was the owner and operator of Sanders Sandblasting and Painting, and Lock-Out Auto.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Larry Sanders, Wayne Sanders, Betty Lee, Joe Sanders and Roger Sanders.

Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife, Marsha Diane Davis Sanders; his sons, James Chad (Dee) Sanders of Rocky Head, Ala. and Harold Brad Sanders of Atmore; his sister, Gail Calhoun of Ozark, Ala. and his grandchildren, Harold Bradley Sanders, II, Blake Sanders and Shelby Noele Sanders.

A family gathering will be held at a later date.

Jessie Dwayne Powell                

Mr. Jessie Dwayne Powell, age 79, passed away Monday, April 29, 2024.  He was born in Charleston, S.C. to Jessie and Janie David Powell. He graduated from East Clarendon High School in Turbeville, S.C.  He served in the United States Air Force with two tours of duty in Vietnam and was a totally disabled Veteran. He retired as VP and General Manager from G.H. Skipper Inc.; was a member of the Board of Directors for Escambia River Electric Coop., past Master Carney Lodge #549, Atmore, Ala., past president of Walnut Hill, Fla. Ruritan Club and past president of Bratt/Davisville Water System.

He was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Freddie Roland Powell; sister, Cecelia Beasley; first wife, Betty Sue Kirby Powell; wife, Connie Lee Powell and daughter-in-law, Shamim Powell.

Mr. Powell is survived by his three children; Dwayne Powell and Melissa Powell, both of Pensacola, Fla. and Christopher Powell (Michelle) of Milton, Fla.; four step-children; Lee Delmar of Walnut Hill, Fla., Mark Delmar (Sharon) of Atmore, Suzanne Delmar Fordham (James) of Huntsville, Ala. and Samantha Delmar Hubbard (Todd) of Nokomis, Ala.; two sisters, Barbara Ann Surette and Elizabeth (Libby) Jackson; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 3, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home with Bro. Charles Melvin officiating. A Masonic Service and Military Honors was conducted.

Graveside services will be held Monday, May 6, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Barrancas National Cemetery at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 3, 2024 from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Robert Jason “Dudley” Hadley

Mr. Robert Jason “Dudley” Hadley, age 54, of Bellwood, Ala. passed away Friday, April 26, 2024 at his home. He was born to Robert Gerald “Bobby” and Shirlene Hadley. He was a native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., a longtime resident of Atmore, Ala. and had been residing in Bellwood, Ala. He was great carpenter and house finisher which he greatly enjoyed doing. He also loved being a mechanic where he was able to fix things, he also enjoyed welding.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Gerald Hadley.
Mr. Hadley is survived by his loving mother, Shirlene Gillman Hadley of Slocomb, Ala.

Joe Rex Chandler

Mr. Joe Rex Chandler, age 82, of Flomaton, Ala. passed away Thursday, May 2, 2024 in Brewton, Ala. He was born in Coosa County, Ala. to Denver and Boncile Galloway Chandler.  He was a longtime member of Atmore Baptist Temple and the owner/operator of J & J Janitorial Services.  His smile was contagious and he never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eva Jewel Smith Chandler; his sons, Terry Chandler and Tim Chandler and his siblings, Dykes Chandler, Jerry Chandler and Jean Bragg.

Mr. Chandler was survived by his daughter, Tonya (Tim) Lee; his step-children, Joey (Angel) Lister, Michelle Hammonds and Alisa (Kenny) Pierce; his daughter-in-law, Melanie Chandler; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 5, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Odom officiating. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Melba Smith Bartlett

Mrs. Melba Smith Bartlett, age 87, a retired nurse of Thomasville, Ala., passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Crowne Health Care in Thomasville. She was born in Bratt, Fla. to the late Daniel Jackson Smith and Daisy Little Smith Bray.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Billy Smith and sisters, Jewel Chandler and Erma Gibson Davis.

Mrs. Bartlett is survived by her husband, Marion Bartlett; grandsons, Colby Brunson and Michael Drew; brothers, Dean Smith, Allen Smith and Leroy Smith; sister, Gladys Davis and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 17, 2024 at 11 a.m. O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Andrews officiating. Burial followed at Kelley Cemetery in Thomasville, Ala.

Thomas Peyton Williams         

Mr. Thomas Peyton Williams, age 78, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Friday, May 3, 2024 in Fairhope, Ala. He was born in McKenzie, Ala. to the late Cliff Peyton Williams and Mary Hardenberg Williams. He served in the Navy Seabees and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was a vocational agriculture teacher for over forty years in Atmore and Flomaton, Ala. He was a Disaster Relief Coordinator for Escambia Baptist Association and went on many disaster relief trips. He was a devoted Christian and a deacon at Little Escambia Baptist Church. He devoted his life to serving God and others.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Hank Peyton Williams.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Barbara McBroom Williams of Atmore; daughter, Mary Kay (Craig) Stratton of Bradenton, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Brenda Williams of Atmore; brother, David (Kathy) Williams of Dadeville, Ala.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Little Escambia Baptist Church in Flomaton with Bro. Jonathan Hill and Bro. James Ivey officiating. Interment will follow in Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Wawbeek, Ala.

Active pallbearers will be Lee Anderson, Tristen Anderson, Kris Bradley, J.T. Bradley, Ronnie Partain, Matt Mize, Vince Johnson and Eddie Conway.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 10a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at Little Escambia Baptist Church.

Eric Lawayne Simpson, Sr.

Mr. Eric Lawayne Simpson, Sr., age 53, of Evergreen, Ala., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024. He was educated in Conecuh and Escambia County School Systems. Attended Southern Normal in Brewton, Ala on an Athletic Football Scholarship.  He was an “All Around Guy” in Football, Baseball and Basketball. He had a passion for sports and wanted to give kinds in the community all he had in his heart. He worked in manufacturing jobs, retail and also fast food. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Evergreen.

He was born in Evergreen (Conecuh County) Ala. to Rhonda E. Simpson.

He was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents, Harrison and Louise Simpson; mother-in-law, Mary Dailey.

Mr. Simpson is survived by his loving wife of twenty-nine years, Patricia D. Simpson; three children, Eric, L. Simpson, Jr., Davonta Simpson and Shauntell Simpson, all of Evergreen; three grandchildren, Eric L. Simpson, III, Promise Simpson and Kylian Betton, all of Evergreen; two sisters, Pamela Simpson of Huntsville, Ala. and Monica Simpson of Evergreen; ;one uncle, Harrison Simpson of Waynesboro, Ga.; three aunts, Hazel Andrews of Waynesboro, Glenda (Kenneth) Jones of Manassas, Va., Cheryl (Maurice) Clay of Warner Robins, Ga. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Unity in Christ

Pallbearers and flower beavers were his family and friends.
