Lack of quorum cancels Atmore council meeting

Mayor Jim Staff and city council members Eunice Johnson (District 3) and Jerome Webster (District 2) were the only elected city officials to show up for the scheduled Monday, March 25, council meeting, forcing last-minute cancellation of the session.
The lack of a quorum, which was just confirmed Monday morning, prompted Staff to declare that the meeting could not proceed, and the gathering was quickly adjourned.
That action allowed the mayor and council to meet the requirements of Alabama’s Open Meetings Act, which requires 24-hour advance notice of a meeting or a substantial change in a meeting already announced.
Council members Webb Nall (District 1) and Chris Harrison (District 5) were unable to attend due to family obligations, while Mayor Pro Tem Shawn Lassiter (District 4) was reportedly out of town on business.
There were only two items on the meeting agenda — the selection of a voting delegate to the Alabama League of Municipalities, and a request to use Houston Avery Park for a Juneteenth observance. Those items will appear on the agenda for the next meeting, set for 4 p.m. on Monday, April 8.
