Atmore man charged in sexual assault of child

Details were not immediately available, but the Escambia County Detention Center (ECDC) website shows that sheriff’s investigators recently arrested a 31-year-old Atmore man for an alleged sexual assault on a child.
Nicholas Dewayne Smith was arrested August 28. He is being held in the county jail on one count each of Class B felonies first-degree assault and first-degree attempted sodomy, as well as aggravated child abuse, which is a Class B felony unless the victim is under the age of 6 years.
Smith remained behind bars Monday morning, September 4.
Other felony arrests reported for the period August 27-31:
*Atmore police arrested a 38-year-old Atmore man, Bobby Aleen Hartley, August 27 on felony drug possession and distribution charges after he was found to be in possession of undisclosed quantities of fentanyl, synthetic marijuana and Ecstasy.
Hartley, who was still in jail Monday, September 4, is charged with one count each of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and resisting arrest.
*County deputies arrested 27-year-old Brandon James McNeal August 28 on a second-degree assault charge. The charge is a Class C felony.
McNeal was released from the county jail on bond August 30.
*Jesse Travis Ellis, 28, of Atmore was arrested August 27 by Atmore police on a felony drug charge.
Ellis, who remained in jail Monday, September 4, is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.
*A 50-year-old Castleberry woman was arrested September 1 by Atmore police.
Tonya Renee Black McCurdy remained behind bars Monday, September 4, charged with one count each of second-degree theft and third-degree burglary.
Both charges are Class C felonies.
