Bulls or bears?
Escambia County High School’s Stock Market team — coached by Douglas Forbes and including Judah Dennis, Daniel Gunaca, Darron Nichols, Hasten Dean and DeAndre Richardson — is currently ranked 16th out of 270 such teams across the state, according to the school’s Facebook page. Known as Alabama Stock Market Game, the course is a 10-week, on-line trading experience during which students begin with $100,000 then purchase stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and make unlimited trades. The teams with the most valuable portfolios at the end of the 10-week period (April 14) win their respective divisions.
Impact Award
Atmore resident Sandra Gray was honored for her community involvement during the most recent regular meeting of the Escambia County Commission. District 5 Commissioner Karean Reynolds presented the Impact Award to Gray in recognition of her continuing work within the community. Mrs. Gray works with the local branch of the American Red Cross, is a founding member of Concerned Citizens of Atmore and is active throughout the community in several other ways.
Making tracks
J.U, Blacksher 7th-grader Emily Rolin, daughter of Alex and Sissy Rolin of McCullough, finished second in the triple jump and was a member of the school’s second-place 4×400 meter relay team in a March 3 track meet at Andalusia. The youngster turned in a 29-feet, 5-inch triple jump and joined teammates Sadie Spencer, Mckenzie Williams and Samantha Henry to grab the runner-up slot in the relay.
New animal shelter
Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson announced during the most recent county commission meeting that a new animal shelter, under the county’s control, should open to the public any day now. The sheriff said “about 80 percent” of the work on the new shelter, which is located at 2763 South Boulevard in Brewton, was done by inmates. Look for a public announcement from Jackson when the shelter is officially open for business.
