A Flomaton man lost his life, and an Atmore man and three children were seriously injured, in a two-vehicle collision that happened last Wednesday, January 19, in the Wawbeek community.
Alabama State Troopers reported that Calvin L. Johnson, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene after the 2004 Honda SUV he was driving collided with a 2003 Toyota pickup driven by Brian T. Grant, 46, of Atmore.
Grant and three unidentified juvenile passengers in his vehicle were injured and were reportedly taken by a procession of medical evacuation helicopters to two area trauma centers.
The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. at U.S. 31’s 51-mile marker, about five miles west of Flomaton, near Old Atmore Road.
Reports show that firefighters from Flomaton, Atmore, Wawbeek, Friendship and Lambeth departments were sent to the crash site, as were those from Escambia (Fla.) Fire Rescue’s Century and Walnut Hill stations.
Grant’s condition and those of the juveniles could not be ascertained by Tuesday’s press deadline. The injured man and his wife, Jodie, have three children, but reports do not indicate whether any of the injured children are the couple’s offspring.
A posting on the Southeastern Youth Rodeo Association’s Facebook page asked that SYRA members and friends pray for Grant and his family, who “have a long road of recovery ahead of them.”
