‘Honoring’ Railroad Bill

The Atmore Historical Society was awarded a grant from The William G. Pomeroy Foundation for a Legends & Lore marker highlighting the infamous outlaw Railroad Bill. In comments about the bandit, Russell Brown with the Alger Sullivan Historical Society said the marker was not to celebrate Railroad Bill’s life because he was an outlaw. However, he was part of Atmore’s lore. Shown at the unveiling Thursday, October 21, are, from left, Herb Hackman and Dana Vickrey with the Atmore Historical Society, and Russell Brown. The marker is in front of the Atmore Railroad Depot, on the city hall side.
