Fountain inmate positive for COVID-19

Special to Atmore News

The Alabama Department of Corrections released this week an update on the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on state inmates. The update:

INMATE POPULATION

ADOC has confirmed that one additional inmate has tested positive for COVID-19 as of May 12:

*Fountain Correctional Facility (Atmore, Alabama) – one inmate

Newly identified positive case(s) include inmate(s) who are symptomatic and inmate(s) who are asymptomatic. All existing quarantine protocols held in-place or newly implemented as recommended by the ADOC’s contracted State Medical Director are being maintained at each facility where newly identified positive inmate(s) are currently housed.

One thousand six hundred forty-nine (1,649) total cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among our inmate population, three (3) of which remain active.

Inmate Vaccine Update

ADOC is in the process of offering free COVID-19 vaccinations to inmates who wish to receive a vaccine.

The department confirmed that five hundred fifty-seven (557) additional inmates have participated in the vaccination process as of May 12:

*Alexander City Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center (Alexander City, Alabama) – one hundred four (104) inmates

*North Alabama Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center (Decatur, Alabama) – two hundred seventy-seven (277) inmates

*Red Eagle Community Work Center (Montgomery, Alabama) – one hundred seventy-six (176) inmates

A total of four thousand sixty-five (4,065) inmates have received a vaccination through the Department as of May 12.

ADOC STAFF

One (1) additional staff member has self-reported a positive test result for COVID-19 as of May 12:

*Criminal Justice Center (Montgomery, Alabama) – one (1) staff member

Six COVID-19 cases among ADOC staff and contracted staff remain active. One thousand thirty-seven (1,037) staff members who previously self-reported a positive test have been cleared by medical providers to return to work.

Staff Vaccine Update

ADOC has completed its scheduled process of offering free COVID-19 vaccinations to staff and contracted staff who wished to receive a vaccine through the Department. As we continue the inmate vaccination process, staff members still have the option to get vaccinated at one of our facilities if they so desire.

The ADOC has confirmed that five (5) additional staff members have voluntarily participated in this process as of May 12:

*Red Eagle Community Work Center – five (5) staff members

A total of eight hundred forty-four (844) staff members have received a vaccination through the Department to-date. Please note that facility-level vaccination data only reflects how many ADOC staff members have received the vaccine through the Department — it does not include staff who have received a vaccine through a community provider.
