The Escambia County High School Blue Devils returned to the football field Monday afternoon (April 26) for spring training in preparation of next season’s start.
According to ECHS head coach Scott Mason, 51 players turned out for the first day of training.
“The guys are looking great,” Mason said. “It is a whole different attitude this season. These guys are buying into what we are trying to build, and they have really come together in the locker room and on the field.”
Mason stressed that with only 4 returning seniors on roster and a slew of new freshmen, the defensive line will look different, while the offensive line will not see much change. Anthony McCants, last season’s starting quarterback, is also returning to the huddle, but according to Mason, McCants has continually worked during the off season and is stronger, bigger and faster.
“McCants threw really well this week,” Mason said. “He is looking really good so far and we are all excited to see what he will bring to the field this season.”
The spring training program for the Blue Devils will last 10 days before returning to a weight and cardio training regime this summer. Mason also added that there are 5 different camps planned for players this summer and 2 7-on-7 scrimmages have been scheduled.
