Robert Franklin Johnson, Jr.

Mr. Robert Franklin Johnson, Jr., age 63, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2019 in Mobile, Ala. He was a native and life-long resident of Atmore, Ala. He was a retired mechanic from Gulf Construction with ten years of service; a veteran serving with the US Army in Special Forces and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. Johnson, Sr. and Lillian Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by one son, Jason (Joy) Johnson of West Blocton, Ala.; two daughters, Chasity (Adam) Johnson of Perdido, Ala. and Ashley (Johnny) Smith of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two brothers, Michael (Kathy) Johnson of Perdido and Terry Johnson of Bay Minette, Ala.; one sister, Diane (Roger) Ward of Atmore; seven grandchildren, Hunter, Joshua, Jason, Jr., Mikie, Chloe, Sophie and Levi; one nephew, Robert and three nieces, Amy, Kristy and Jenni.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 13, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Thurl Pearson officiating. Burial will follow at McCullough Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 13, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Johnson, Jason Johnson, Jr., Johnny Smith, Adam Barrow, Ricky Gohagan and Billy Aaron.

Michael Wayne Parker

Parker

Mr. Michael Wayne Parker, age 68, passed away at his home Friday, November 15, 2019. He was a native of Gulfport, Miss., former resident of McHenry, Miss. and had resided in Atmore, Ala. for the past twenty-three years. He was a self-employed contractor most of his working career and a member of the Perryville Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of twenty-nine years, Linda Rolin Parker; parents, Modie and Doris Parker; three brothers, M.P. Parker, Bud Parker and Modie Parker, Jr. and two sisters, Sue Parker and Dolly Edwards.

Mr. Parker is survived by his son, Chad (Anitra) Parker of Poarch, Ala.; daughter, Natalie (Chris) Lee of Poarch, Ala.; brother, Bobby (Brenda) Parker of McHenry, Miss.; sister, Mary Agnes Smith of McHenry, Miss.; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 18, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Dewayne McQueen officiating. Burial followed at Judson Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday, November 17, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Lynn Eley, Joseph Parker, Tommy Parker, Jake Thomas, Larry Faircloth, John O’Barr, Tyler Jackson and Tyler Buckley.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Parker, Jamie Thomas, Ricky Faircloth, Josh Thomas, Jerry Faircloth, Bubba O’Barr and Chris Lee, II.

Van Roosevelt Smith 

Smith

Mr. Van Roosevelt Smith, age 62, of Atmore (Freemanville), Ala., passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at SAAD Hospice in Mobile, Ala. A native of Greenville, Ala., he was reared in Brewton, Ala. and was a 1975 graduate of Southern Normal School. He attended Kentucky St. University and Auburn University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Education.  He taught for thirty years as a teacher/coach at Southern Normal, Baldwin Co., Georgiana, and J. F. Shields Schools and Reid St. Technical College in Evergreen, Ala. and Jeff Davis (now Coastal) Community College in Brewton. He was employed nine years at Wind Creek Casino until his health began to fail. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church. He enjoyed mentoring young minds, spending time with his family, fishing, traveling, watching sports, namely North Carolina Tar Heel basketball and SEC football. He also enjoyed listening to gospel music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Clara Smith.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Wilma Quarker Smith of Atmore; two daughters, Teresa Quarker Smith and Carlie Quarker Smith, both of Atmore; three brothers, Earnest Jack (Doris) Smith, William Roy (Gwen) Smith, and James “Book” (Renee) Smith, all of Frankfort, Ky.; two grandsons, Carter Van Smith and William Lucas Smith, both of Atmore; two aunts, Carrie McCrovey and Eula Lyons, both of Pensacola; mother-in-law, Retha Quarker of Atmore and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church with Pastor Edgar McCarthy officiating. Interment will be in Pierce Rabb & Montgomery Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, November 22, 2019 from 2 – 7 pm at the funeral home. His body will lie in-state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Robert “Bobby” McGhee

McGhee

Mr. Robert “Bobby” McGhee, age 72, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019, in Atmore. He was born to the late Roy and Opal Faye Reeves McGhee in Providence, Rhode Island. He was a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and previously served as a Tribal Council member. He was a member of St. Anna’s Episcopal Church in Poarch, Ala. After twenty years of service he retired as a First Sergeant from the United States Marine Corps. During his military service he completed two terms during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart. He was also a retired Postal Carrier from the United States Post Office in Atmore.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chief Calvin and Joyce McGhee; his parents; his brother, Kenny McGhee and his first wife, Doris McGhee.

Mr. McGhee is survived by his wife, Sharon McGhee of Atmore; two sons, Robbie McGhee of Atmore, Daniel McGhee of Bay Minette, Ala. and a daughter, Shawn Wells of Indiana; one foster daughter, Denise Curly and daughter-in-law Jaime McGhee; five sisters Kay (Ray) Archer, Linda McGhee, Barbara (Dave) Stephens, all of Atmore and Rose (Dave) Conlon of Okeechobee, Fla.; four grandsons, Brice, Xan, Daughtry, Jamison and one great-grandson, Kai; many nieces, nephews, God-children, family and friends. He was referred to as Uncle Bobby by many loved ones (and self-proclaimed as the inspiration to Janis Joplin’s rendition of “Me and Bobby McGee!”)

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 21, 2019 at noon from the Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Judson Creek Indian Cemetery with full military honors.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Stephens, Chris Stephens, John Stephens, John O’Barr, Charles “Bubba” O’Barr, Ronnie Huskey, and Luke Vega.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Daughtry, Ronnie Lehman, Bo Slate, Jason Griffey, Dave Stephens and Andrew Daughtry.

The family will receive friends Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. until noon from the Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Willie Thomas (Doug) Johnson

Mr. Willie Thomas (Doug) Johnson, age 88, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019 in Atmore Community Hospital

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 1 p.m. at New Order Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, November 22, 2019 from 3 until 6 p.m. at Christian Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

Ceola Rivers

Ms. Ceola Rivers, age 61, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2019. She was born in Robinsonville, Ala. to the late Carrie Mae Brown and Moses Rivers. She was a 1977 graduate of Escambia County High School. She worked as a ward clerk and CAN at Atmore Nursing Facility for many Years. She was a member of Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Emmanuel Rivers; two sisters, Mary Francis Hall and Iola Tucker; one brother, Robert Rivers.

Ms. Rivers is survived by her daughter, LaConstance Rivers-Wiggins; four grandchildren, Sabrina, De’Andre, Jasmine and TyDestiny, all of Atmore; four sisters, Lillie Ruth Wiggins, Annie Brown, Rachel (JP) Wiggins and Carolyn Rivers; seven brothers, Charles Brown, Willie (Pearl) Brown, James (Brenda) Rivers, Jerry (Nancy) Thicklin, Ray Charles (Lasqetta) Riley, Terry Riley and Milton Rivers; a special sister, Tommie Spencer and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center with 1st Lady Kimberly North, Pastor and Bishop Catadro North, Overseer and Eulogist. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers and floral attendants were family and friends.
