Atmore Fire Chief Ron Peebles announced Tuesday, September 17, that any and all outside burning has been banned within the city limits until further notice.
Peebles said the ban would be lifted only after the city receives sufficient rainfall to lessen the chance of fires spreading through the parched community.
“It won’t be after the next thunderstorm,” he said. “It will only be after we get a soaking rain of two or three days.”
He added that the fire department would strictly enforce the ban.
The Alabama Forestry Commission issued this week a Fire Danger Advisory for all 67 Alabama counties, effective immediately, until rainfall is received. Current drought conditions and persistent high temperatures have combined to create an “atmosphere favorable for wildfires.”
