Atmore police are still probing the Friday (July 26) shooting death of an 84-year-old Atmore man, trying to determine if foul play is involved.
Results of tests on evidence sent to the state crime lab will determine the direction the investigation takes.
In a press release issued today (Monday, July 29), Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said what started out as a death investigation “will be processed as a homicide and will remain open pending forensic testing results.”
Police patrol officers responded around 11 a.m. to a report of a deceased person at a home on Jack Springs Road. They discovered the body of Willie Ankum, who reportedly suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, inside the residence.
Anyone with information regarding Ankum’s death is urged to contact APD’s Investigations Unit at 251-368-9141.
