Fountain CO arrested for phone-smuggling attempt

Williams

News Staff Report

A correctional officer at the Fountain Correctional Facility was arrested December 20 by Alabama Department of Corrections agents and charged with attempting to smuggle contraband into the prison.
ALDOC officials announced that 34-year-old Tony Williams of Frisco City, a veteran of 10-plus years as a state corrections officer, was arrested for “prohibited activities” and use of office for personal gain.
Authorities said a DOC K9 unit alerted on Williams vehicle, where a search turned up several packages that contained a total of 10 cell phones. Williams reportedly admitted to purchasing the phones with the intention of selling them to inmates, who are prohibited from possessing them.
Williams, who resigned from his job after being arrested, was taken to the Escambia County Detention Center. An employee of the jail’s booking and release division reported Friday morning that he remained in the facility, awaiting a bond hearing.
