Gulf Coast Cancer Centers and Eastern Shore Ear Nose and Throat will offer free screenings for oral, head and neck cancer on Wednesday, March 7. Board certified otolaryngologists and oncologists will screen adults from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Eastern Shore Ear Nose and Throat office located at 27961 Hwy. 98, Suite 11 in Daphne.
The American Cancer Society estimates more than 60,000 cases of oral, head and neck cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. Tobacco and alcohol use, as well as human papillomavirus, are risk factors for cancers of the head and neck.
“Early detection is very important. Most head and neck cancers have an excellent survival rate when found in early stages of development,” Dr. William Hixson, radiation oncologist at Gulf Coast Cancer Centers, said. “Unfortunately, due to the lack of public awareness of these types of cancers, they are often discovered in late stages when they are more likely to be life-threatening. Not only does our screening program look for symptoms, it educates people about warning signs and prevention.”
