The Escambia County Habitat for Humanity is looking for a few – or several – volunteers to help with work set to begin this week on its first Atmore home since 2013.
“We have had some set-backs in getting started with this project, but I believe we’re on our way to getting on track,” said Lisa Tindell, executive director for ECHFH. “In order to get things going, we are in need of some muscle in the form of volunteers for the this project.”
The project Tindell refers to is the renovation of a house donated for the next family on the Habitat list. The home located at 507 East Craig Street will require demolition of the inside of the home before renovations can begin.
“The home was donated to Habitat but is in desperate need of renovations and updating from top to bottom,” Tindell said. “The older home has a lot of issues on the inside, but the bones are good and we are thankful for that blessing.”
The demolition will have to be complete on the home before any renovations can begin, Tindell said.
“We have done a walk-through with a contractor and have concluded that the house will need to be gutted,” Tindell said. “That means all the wall, flooring and ceiling material will have to come out. We have to get everything down to the studs before any real work can be done. Once the demolition of the inside is completed, we’re hoping we can begin the work on putting things back together for our next family.”
Tindell said two days have been set aside to begin the demolition work and volunteers will be needed on both days to get ready for contractors who will complete the renovation. Demolition will be done on Thursday and Friday, July 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tools for the task will be provided, Tindell said.
Volunteers will be required to sign a safety waiver before being allowed on the site to work. Volunteers must also be at least 16 years old or be under the supervision of a qualified adult leader.
“This is a good sized home and there is a lot to be done to prepare for contractors,” Tindell said. “We need all the help we can get and will be happy to have anyone – individuals or groups – join us to help make someone’s dream of owning a home begin to unfold.”
Escambia County Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization who makes homeownership possible for individuals who qualify for the no-interest mortgage program of the group.
