Five hurt in crash

Emergency personnel load Houston into the ambulance

Five people were taken by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital Wednesday afternoon, June 21, with varying degrees of injury after a two-vehicle collision on Martin Luther King Drive.

According to Atmore Police Department reports, the crash occurred around 12:58 p.m., when a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 24-year-old Mikieldra Houston of Atmore pulled onto MLK from Bragg Street and into the path of a 2001 Buick LeSabre driven by Bessie Johnson, 73, also of Atmore.

Both drivers reportedly suffered injuries that were not believed to be life threatening. They were taken to the local hospital, as were a 51-year-old female passenger in the Buick and two young passengers, ages 14 and 1, in the Grand Am, which came to rest on the slope of a ditch.

Houston told police she did not see the Buick until a brief second before the two vehicles collided.
