Several concerts are scheduled to be held at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church.
Broadway and More
Now an annual tradition, the GSUMC Snowbird Broadway and More concert will be held Thursday, February 9, and Friday, February 10, at 7 p.m., in the church sanctuary. The performances will feature excerpts from such memorable Broadway musicals as Oklahoma, Oliver, The Wiz and a number of other favorites from Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel and Jekyll & Hyde.
Soloists will include the Bauer Trio, Marsha Guyer, Barbara Shepard and Julie-Ann Brazell as well as several instrumentalists. The choir will be directed by Cody Johnson, GSUMC Director of Worship Arts and accompanied by GSUMC pianist / organist Jackie Dahlman.
Broader Than Broadway showcases GSUMC youth talent
A show Monday, February 13, at 7 p.m., in the sanctuary will feature the youth choir of Gulf Shores UMC, with soloists, instrumentalists and band.
Their numbers will range from Broadway hits to classic rock and modern popular music. The youth choir will share a medley of songs from Grease, A Tribute to Queen and tunes from the show Sister Act as well as You’re a Good Friend, Charlie Brown and Wicked.
“These young people have remarkable talent”, said Director Cody Johnson. “They have developed it by working hard and focusing on the important points of stage and concert presentation. I’m proud of their progress.”
Vocal soloists will include Haley Bingert, David Brackett, Julie-Ann Brazell, Charlie Hollis, Ali Livingston, Abrianna Madden, Caitlen Sommerville and Chandler Wells. Local violinist Lauren Bradford will also play and dancers include Michelle Conway and Anna Branscomb.
Tickets are $10 per person. Concert proceeds will go toward support for the Youth Ecuador Mission and the GSUMC music program.
Sacred Sounds organ concert
The fully restored Reuter pipe organ at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church will be featured in the annual Sacred Sounds concert Sunday evening, February 19, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person.
Reserved seating is available for 2017 concert series sponsors.
Jackie Dahlman, GSUMC organist / pianist / accompanist, has selected several numbers by well-known composers, including Bach, Franck and Karg-Elert.
Guest soloists include organists Irene Walker of Foley and Paul Anderson of Elberta. Dr. Michael Brown of Gulf Shores will present several trumpet numbers with organ accompaniment.
A member of the American Guild of Organists, Mrs. Dahlman has been organist at the Gulf Shores church since 2004. She received a degree in organ from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., and was vocal music specialist for elementary grades in Minneapolis schools before moving to Gulf Shores. Mrs. Dahlman frequently attends organ seminars abroad, including England, Scotland, France, Germany and Spain and has been fortunate to play organs in Westminster Abbey, Notre Dame Cathedral, Strasbourg Cathedral and the Royal Chapel at Versailles. She is a frequent pianist for Gulf Shores Community Theater productions.
