Perdido School holds spelling bee

On Wednesday December 7, as the rounds kept rolling on, 23 students, fourth-through eighth-grade level homeroom spelling bee winners vied for the chance to represent Perdido School in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Gehman graduates at UA

Kristen Gehman of Atmore was among some 2,270 students at University of Alabama who were awarded degrees during winter commencement Saturday, December 10. Gehman received a Bachelor’s Degree. With this graduating class, UA will have awarded more than 257,000 degrees since its founding in 1831 as the state’s first public university.

Mayor: DOC downtown ‘not a problem’

Although officials of the local Chamber of Commerce are not happy that the Alabama Department of Corrections has begun leasing office space on North Main Street in Atmore, the city’s chief executive officer said he doesn’t see a problem with the decision.
