Note: An indictment means that a grand jury has found enough evidence to proceed with the prosecution of an individual charged with a crime. It is not a finding of guilt or innocence.
An Atmore woman surrendered to Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office officials on May 29 after a county grand jury handed up an indictment against her on child abuse and other charges.
According to court documents and sheriff’s reports, 41-year-old Katherine Renee Scott of a Still Farm Road address was processed into the Escambia County Detention Center on two counts of willful child abuse and one count each of first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence.
The indictment was the result of a joint investigation by the Escambia County Department of Human Resources and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation. No details of the investigation have been released.
Scott — also known at various times as Renee K. Scott, Katherine Scott Gohagin, Katherine Renee Qualls and Katherine Q. Scott — reportedly once worked in the office of Southern Plumbing Company in Atmore, which was owned by her late husband, and also formerly owned and operated a bakery here.
ECSO records show that Scott was released shortly after being booked into the county jail, when a $200,000 bond was posted on her behalf.
