Two Atmore men were arrested April 29 after an unspecified quantity of marijuana was discovered inside a vehicle that was stopped for a minor traffic violation.
Police Chief Chuck Brooks reported that Brian Jerrell Brown, 33, and Frederick Williams, 38, were each taken into custody after the vehicle was finally stopped by a patrol officer who spotted the violation.
“Around three a.m., an officer made contact with a brown Nissan sedan that had no tag lights,” Brooks said. “The vehicle was headed north on (U.S.) 31, then turned east on Liberty Street. When it turned onto Liberty the officer activated his blue lights and tried to pull it over.”
He said the sedan’s driver, later identifiedas Brown, paid the flashing strobes no heed.
“He ignored the blue lights and continued driving north on Mobile Street before he finally pulled into the trailer park at Mobile and Peachtree streets,” the chief said. “Before the car even stopped, an unidentified male [later identified as Williams] got out and fled on foot. Another passenger who was in the back seat also fled.”
A search of the Nissan turned up the marijuana, as well as the unspecified items of paraphernalia. Brown was taken into custody at the scene, and Williams was eventually tracked down and arrested by lawmen. Brooks said the second passenger who fled is unknown to police.
Both suspects were charged with one count each of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to flee or elude law enforcement.
