Atmore City Council, sitting one member short, gave unanimous approval on Friday (February 28) to an Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) license application for a local restaurant.
The license — a restaurant retail liquor permit for Cajun Boiling Spot on Trammell Street — was the only item on the special, called meeting’s agenda.
District 5’s Chris Harrison was unable to attend the session. The remaining council members — District 1’s Webb Nall, District 2’s Jerome Webster, District 3’s Eunice Johnson and District 4’s Shawn Lassiter — gave the application the green light without any discussion.
City Clerk Becca Smith said the one-item meeting was held because final approval of such a license is a “lengthy process” that takes about 2-5 weeks.
Since the last council meeting was canceled due to lack of a quorum, and the council’s next regular session will not be until March 10, the council members wanted to “help [the restaurant] out” and speed up the process.
“We have to send a letter to the ABC Board, letting them know we’ve approved it,” Smith said. “They will then send it back to us for final approval. It takes a while to get all that done.”
When final approval is granted, Cajun Boiling Spot will be the only restaurant in the city that sells liquor by the drink but is not inside the city’s Arts & Entertainment District.
