News Staff Report
This meeting was held Tuesday afternoon, November 12, after Atmore News press time.
A trio of Atmore City Council members gave unanimous approval to a resolution to vacate the allowances made for continuances of Marshall, Greer and Diamond avenues in southwest Atmore.
District 1’s Webb Nall, District 2’s Jerome Webster and District 3’s Eunice Johnson gave the green light to the property measure. City Clerk Becca Smith said Mayor Pro Tem Shawn Lassiter (District 4) and District 5’s Chris Harrison were each out of town due to business obligations and were unable to attend the council session.
Codes Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn said the allowances were initially made in case the three city streets in question were ever extended to connect with Craig Street. Marshall, Greer and Diamond all end at their junctions with the westernmost portion of Horner Street.
The action means the city will not maintain those “imaginary” streets if the field across from Rachel Patterson Elementary School were to be developed in the future. Vaughn also said the street vacation will not affect city maintenance and care of Marshall and Greer, each a two-block street, or Diamond, which only runs for about a half block.
In the only other business conducted during the November 12 meeting, which was held after Atmore News had gone to press, the council members approved the use of Boxcar Willie Park on November 23.
Atmore Assembly of God Church will conduct a Powerhouse Youth Ministry program on that date that will include a special speaker, singing and outreach. No starting or ending times were noted for the event.
