The Atmore Lions Club met at Atmore Community Hospital’s Mayson Auditorium on November 20. The meeting was called to order by the president, Lion Joyce Petty, who also gave the blessing and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Lion Petty reported that Atmore Lions Club is working with Barbara Whatley, Leo sponsor at Escambia County High School, on guidelines for a scholarship. She also reminded those who signed up to work at the Alabama Lions Eye Site exams that it will be from 9 to 1 on November 22. Updates were given on plans for the Christmas parade, awards to be presented at the December 18th meeting, as well as reminders of the District Convention February 21-22 in Atmore and the state convention in Montgomery April 24-27, plus the OWA diabetes walk in March.
Lion Sara Smith introduced Stephanie Myrick, Director of the Escambia County Child Advocacy Center, as the speaker. Myrick explained the work of the organization and how it helps families as well as the children who are abused. As a service project, Lions donated 25 bags plus blankets, snacks, toilet articles, grooming items, and teddy bears to go in those bags which will be given to children when they are removed from the home and don’t have time to gather items to take with them.
Police Chief Chuck Brooks was present to receive a check for $1,000 which will go towards Shop with a Cop.
Lion Petty closed out the meeting by showing a patch which the Atmore Lions Club received to signify at least $50 per member given to the Lions Club International Fund. Thanks to all who support Atmore Lions Club’s projects to raise money for the many projects they donate to. This group truly lives up to its motto “We Serve.”
