Atmore City Council members, during their October 14 meeting, gave city codes enforcement officers the green light to begin the abatement of weeds and tall grass on 14 city properties.
City Clerk Becca Smith said Codes Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn told the council the owners of each property had been contacted and warned that the city would take responsibility for cleaning up an initial list of 22 properties if arrangements hadn’t been made to take care of the problem by the specified deadline.
Each property owner will be billed for the cleanup, and those who refuse to pay will have tax liens placed against their property and the amount added to their ad valorem tax bills.
All five council members were present at the meeting, and the measure received unanimous approval.
In other business, the council:
*Approved the transfer from a previous owner of a Retail Beer, Off-Premises-Only license to Diamond Foods #22 on South Main Street.
*Approved the route for what turned out to be one of the longest Escambia County High School homecoming parades in recent memory.
Note: The meeting was held on a Tuesday afternoon due to the Columbus Day holiday. It was conducted after last week’s edition of Atmore News had gone to press.
