Biggest crowd, most entries
News Staff Report
A reported record crowd lined Main Street and numerous side streets last Saturday, December 10, for the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Twilight Christmas Parade, reportedly the largest holiday caravan in city history.
Estimates by city officials and police put the crowd’s size at “more than 11,000” people who jostled for position to grab candy, moon pies, stuffed animals and more as the 110-unit parade moved through the downtown area.
The procession’s start was delayed momentarily when a CSX freight train encountered a pickup that had become stranded on the tracks. The train came to a stop barely a foot from the truck.
