William Joseph “Bill” McMurphy, IV

Mr. William Joseph “Bill” McMurphy, IV, age 79, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022 in Pensacola, Fla.  He was born in Atmore, Ala. where he resided his entire life. A graduate of Gordon Military College, Barnesville, Ga., he served in the Alabama Army National Guard and farmed most of his life. He was co-owner of McMurphy Oil Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William J. McMurphy, Jr. and Annie Lois Glass McMurphy. 

Mr. McMurphy is survived by his sons, Turner McMurphy of Pace, Fla. and Justin (Nicole) McMurphy of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; two brothers, William Joseph “Joe” (Toni) McMurphy, III and John Douglas McMurphy, all of Atmore.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Luke McMurphy, nieces and a nephew; friends, Janet McLeod and Hunter Mosley; caretaker, Kenisha Lee and niece, Sandi McMurphy.

A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date with the Rev. Waylon Stuckey officiating.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice.

Lois Overstreet Morris 

Morris

Mrs. Lois Overstreet Morris, age 86, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday January 20, 2022. She was born on in Robinsonville, Ala. to the late M. W. and Rosie Godwin Overstreet. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse who assisted in delivering over 300 babies, many being at Atmore Community Hospital during her thirty year career. She was a member of Calvary Deliverance Temple. 

She was preceded in death by her father, M.W. Overstreet and her mother, Rosie Godwin Overstreet Dunn; her daughter, Rita Fay James; three brothers and one sister. 

Mrs. Morris is survived by her son, Steve (Kristina) Morris, Sr. of Atmore; her daughters, Elaine McKinley of Atmore and Patti Prater of Newnan, Ga.; her brother, Jim (Vicky) Overstreet of Atmore; her sisters, Mary Overstreet of California and Diane Dunn of Mobile, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Jason, Kari, Sara, Heather, Matthew, Luke, Kathlene, Will and Steven, Jr. along with seven great- grandchildren. 

Graveside services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Sis. Sheila Enfinger and Sis. Eulah officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. 

Active pallbearers will be Paul Adams, Steven Morris, Jacob Thomas, Matthew McGill, Brian McGill and Britton Morris.

Vera Mae Rice

Mrs. Vera Mae Rice, age 91, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022 in Jay, Fla. She was born in Bay Minette, Ala. and has resided most of her life in Flomaton, Ala. She was a member of the Gospel Light Temple Church.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and beading. She loved working in all her gardens, painting, and going fishing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Robert Adams and Clara (Williams) Adams; one son, Dale Johnson; three husbands, Febra Johnson, Nathan Savage, and James Rice.

Mrs. Rice is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn (Randy) Buckhault of Brewton, Ala.; Virginia (Chuck) Edwards, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandchildren, Shelley Victor and Nathan Edwards; two great-grandchildren, Phillip Victor, Dakota Victor; other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home LLC with Sis. Ester Blair Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Flomaton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends January 22, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Petty- Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Mary Ellen Ray

Ms. Mary Ellen Ray, age 24, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2022 in Atmore. She was born in Birmingham, Ala. and has resided most of her life in Atmore She loved music and dancing. She always had a vibrant personality, a very contagious smile. She enjoyed watching movies all the time.

She was preceded in death by her one sister, Angela Ray; grandfather, Jimmy Ray, and grandparents, David and Ellen Allen.

Ms. Ray is survived by her parents, Joe and Jeni Ray of Atmore; best friend and sister, Marina Whatley; grandmother, Mary Ray of Atmore; numerous cousins, relatives, and friends.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Robinsonville Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Weber officiating. Burial will follow at Little Rock Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, January 21, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home LLC.

Cody Ryan Taylor

Mr. Cody Ryan Taylor, age 23, of Perdido, Ala., passed away Sunday. January 16, 2022 at his residence. He was born in Fairhope, Ala. to his parents, Michael L.  and Angelia Taylor. He was a son, a brother, grandson, uncle and friend.  He was an avid Auburn fan.

He was preceded in death by many love ones. 

Mr. Taylor is survived by his father, Michael L. Taylor of Perdido; his mother and step-father, Angelia and Norman Hadley of Perdido; his brother, Jake H. Taylor of Perdido; his sister, Megan Owens of Perdido; his nieces and nephews, Lily and Kip Owens and Cadence and Silas Ray, all of Perdido and Mobile, Ala.; his grandparents, Wayne and Tina Turner of Perdido and Shelby Caraway of Brewton, Ala.; his uncle, Wayne Turner, Jr. of Perdido; his aunt, Shandala Boutwell of Bay Minette, Ala.; his best friend/brother, Dakota Lambeth of Perdido; a very precious friend, Courtney Hall along with many other loved ones and friends. 

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Sis. Helen Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Perdido Baptist Church Cemetery.

Nan Reia Wise Norris

Mrs. Nan Reia Wise Norris, age 85, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022. She was born in Atmore to Odus Lafayette and Elizabeth Hawke Wise.  She retired from the Escambia County Alabama School System with twenty-five years of service.  She was a member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, grand-mother, great-grand mother, sister, teacher and friend. Other than her family, she loved her Lord, flowers and chocolate!  She couldn’t wait to show you a new plant or a blooming plant in her yard, and she was known to hide chocolate all over her house for her pleasure only! 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty-nine years, James Norris. 

Mrs. Norris is survived by her daughters, Tina N. (Scott) Brooks of McCullough, Ala.; René N. (Lamar) Godwin of Oak Grove, Fla. and Michelle Norris of Lafayette, Ala.; her sister, Clair (Terre) McGill of Atmore; six grandchildren, Zachary Brooks, Cassie Skelton (Stephan), Norris Brooks (Rebecca), Ethan Brooks (Katie), Olivia Booth (Brett) and Allie Brooks;  eight great- grandchildren, Riley Brooks, Wyatt Brooks, Blakely Skelton, Sanders Skelton, EliSkelton, Evee June Miller, Briggs Booth and Fitz Booth. 

Graveside services will be held Monday, January 24, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore with Bro. Bobby Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. 

Active pallbearers will be Zachary Brooks, Norris Brooks, Ethan Brooks, Stephan Skelton, Brett Booth and Matt Mallett.

Bobbie Kimberly Bonner McCurdy

Mrs. Bobbie Kimberly Bonner McCurdy, age 69, of Hattiesburg, Miss., passed away Monday, December 10, 2021. She was born in Natchez, Miss, to Raymond and Lois Bonner. She was a homemaker and loved to spend time with family and camping.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. McCurdy is survived by three children, James (Susan) McCurdy of Century, Fla., Muranda (Federic) Moore of Flomaton, Ala. and Aletha Mattison of Purvis, Miss.; three brothers, Raymond  (JoAnn) Bonner of Elberta, Ala., Michael (Lou) Bonner of Hattiesburg and Joseph (Debbie) Bonner of Spanish Fort, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Misty Madewell, Mary Madewell, Blaze Harkness, Kuper (Sammie) Harkness, Chance McCurdy, Cheyanne Garnett, Kaylyn Garnett, Jasmine Mattison, and Lillian (Lily) Mattison; eight great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Bratt Baptist Church in Bratt, Fla. at 2 p.m. Open to all friends and family.

Mary Deloris Biggs

Ms. Mary Deloris Biggs, age 66, passed away Friday, January 21, 2022 in Brewton, Ala. She was born in Mobile, Ala. and resided in Decatur, Ala. most of her life, but has also lived in Flomaton, Ala. for the past six and half years. She was a barber for over fifteen years. She enjoyed fishing, going to the beach, and taking care of her pets.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Franklin (Gene Rigby) Biggs and one brother, Douglas Franklin Biggs.
Ms. Biggs is survived by her two sisters, Carolyn Boutwell, of Flomaton and Betty Sherrill, of Moulton, Ala.; special niece, Patricia Dunn, of Flomaton and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Rigby Cemetery.

Juanita C. McGhee

Mrs. Juanita C. McGhee, age 76, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022 in Pensacola, Fla. She was born in Colquitt, Ga. and has resided in Mobile, Ala. most of her life. She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Foley Branch. She loved Alabama Football, and her dog Browning. She enjoyed going to the beach and fishing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Broughton (Ethel Toliver) Cowart; husband, Gene Lee McGhee; two sons, Joey Dewayne Ivy, Randy Lee McGhee; two grandchildren, Angel McGhee, Evan Michael McGhee; one sister, Emma Humphrey; three brothers, Cecil Cowart, Lester Cowart, and Jerry Cowart.

Mrs. McGhee is survived by one son, Michael (Angela) McGhee, of Atmore, Ala.; one daughter, Alesia Ann (Michael) Adams, of Bay Minette, Ala.; one sister, Patricia Kincaid, of Bainbridge, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Adams, Jonathon Adams, Adam Adams, Colin McGhee, Alexis McGhee, Dylan McGhee, Tyson McGhee; five great-grandchildren, Emelia Ann Adams, Brooklyn Davidson, Eve Davidson, Addison McGhee, Claire McGhee; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Glenn Edward Anderson

Mr. Glenn Edward Anderson, age 78, Atmore, Ala., of passed away Saturday, January 22, 2022 at his home. He was born September 21, 1943 in Clio, Ala. to Allyne and Edward Anderson. He worked for Container Corp. Brewton, Ala. for eighteen years as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing the guitar and listening to all types of music.

He was preceded in death his parents and one sister, Rachel Gallent.

Mr. Anderson is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Patricia Anderson of Atmore; one daughter, Lisa (Tony) Byrd, of Chilton Co., Ala.; three grandchildren, Corey (Amanda) Smith, Taylor Smith, of S. C., Kyla Cyphers, of Ga.; one sister, Charlotte (David) Matthews of Columbus, Ga.; one brother, James (Judy) Tidwell, of Eufaula, Ala.; other relatives and friends.

Omarr Brown

Omarr Brown, age 43, of Mobile, Ala., passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 at U.S.A/ Medical Center.

Willie Ruth Tolbert-Knotts

Ms. Willie Ruth Tolbert-Knotts, age 92, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022. She was born in Atmore to the late William and Viola Tolbert. She was a member of Mt. Shiloh Missionary Baptist church in Nokomis, Ala. and was a faithful member until her death. She received her Associate of Art Degree in General Education from Faulkner State Jr. College and continued her education pursuing her passion and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She had a love and huge heart for people, was a great talker and loved laughter. She had a special love for her Silver Sneakers Club. Her love for her pet dogs played a special part in her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ms. Knotts is survived by her beloved daughter, Veronica Tolbert of Tallahassee, Fla.; two granddaughters, Tracey Talbert and Whitney Tolbert, both of Tallahassee; one half-sister, Ethel Ree Manning of Atmore; devoted friends and caregivers, Branella Lambert, Marlene Poindexter and Barbara Barron, all of Atmore; special friends, Edna Grant and Johnnie Mae Norman, both of Freemanville, Ala., Barbara Ann Rothchild ad Agnes Wilson, both of Atmore and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Christian Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor James Stephenson, Euglogist/Officiant. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Nelson Barron, Winstron Crenshaw, Winstron Barron, Latorie Barron and Oneal Crenshaw.

Brandon De’Vonta’ Jones

Brandon De’Vonta’ Jones, age 30, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, January 14, 2022 in Springville, Ala. He was educated in both Escambia and Madison counties. He began his Christian experience with Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Monroe Tucker, Jr.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harkless (Ollie) Dailey, Elmore (Zeta) Riley, Willie (Rosie) Jones, Amy Smith and Eliza French; uncles, Victor L. Edwards, Donne Jones and Erby L. Jones; aunts, Rosemary Jones and Gloria Johnson; cousin, Lajuan Morrison and bonus father, Michael Williams.

Mr. Jones is survived by mother, Valorie Jones; father, Michael French; siblings, Bryson Ty’Lee Williams, Brayhaun T’Ja’Rel Brown and one bonus sister, Kytoria Lawson; grandparents, Ollie M. Jones and Alphonzia (Mildred) Edwards; special nieces, Aubree Na’Loni Williams, I’Lan Reign Henderson and Kassidy Marshall and very special friend, Keteria Hoffman; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center with Bishop Catadro North, Pastor; Rev. Charles Johnson, Eulogist and Pastor Darlene McMillan, Presider. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bryson Williams, Labarryon Jones, Ray Charles Wiggins, Terrance Jones, Charles Jones, Christopher Jones, James Jackson and Dakieth Jones.

Dawn Marie (Fisher) Maggert

Mrs. Dawn Marie (Fisher) Maggert, age 51, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, January 21, 2022 at her home. She was a beloved wife, mother, friend, and second mom to many. She kept an open-door and open-arms policy for all she met. Her deepest loves were her children, her husband of thirty-three years, Jesus, travel, coffee, and the Waffle House. Her death was very unexpected. She and her husband both grew up in Blackduck, Minn. and made their home in Bemidji, Minn., but spent the winter months in Atmore.

She was preceded in death by her biological father, Dan Fisher; foster parent, Lee Hochstetler

Mrs. Maggart is survived by her husband Mark; four sons, Kristopher (and wife), Nickolas, Mitchel, and RJ, and one daughter, Kaylee; five grandchildren; biological mother, Sharon Fisher;

three biological siblings, Danny Fisher, Dennis Fisher, and David Fisher; foster mother, Sally Hochstetler and siblings.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Grace Fellowship with funeral services following at 11 a.m.

Visitation in Atmore will take place at 10:00am on Wednesday, January 26 at Grace Fellowship with a funeral service following at 11:00am.

In Bemidji, Minn., visitation will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Evangelical Free Church with a funeral service at 11 a.m.

Helen Ann Nelson

Miss Helen Ann Nelson, age 76, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, January 22, 2022. She was known to her family and friends as Annie. She always had a smile and a memory like no one else. She was her family’s Angel from God. She valued her time with her family above all else. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and (Annie Lee Stokes) Nelson; one sister, Dorothy Lee Nelson Martin; one brother, Howard Paul Nelson and her nephew, Richard Leon “Ricky” McGhee, Jr.

Miss Nelson is survived by Eloise Nelson (Harold) Peacock, Rhonda Kay (Melton) Kendrick, Melissa Kendrick (Brian) Davison, Stephanie Kendrick (Larry, Jr.) Paul, Angela McGhee (Jamie) Mondaco, all of Atmore; Joy Nelson (Pete) Smith, Latisha Smith (Jason) Hadley, all of Perdido, Ala.; Christine (Mark) McClure of Jacksonville, Fla.; Tiffany Jones (Brian) Benfield of Panama City, Fla.; Anna (Alan) Evanoff of Pensacola, Fla. and several great nieces and nephews.

Bertha Inez “Polly” Dean

Ms. Bertha Inez “Polly” Dean, age 71, passed away Monday, January 24, 2022 in Atmore, Ala. She has been a lifelong resident Atmore. She was an avid Alabama Football Fan and watching wrestling. She enjoyed crocheting, and cooking for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melton (Gladys Johnson) Amos; two brothers, James Oneil Amos, Will Amos, and aunt and uncle Margaret and Wade Johnson.
She is survived by her one son, Michael Glen “Wormy” (Amy) Dean, of Atmore; one daughter, Lawanda Lynn Coker, of Nokomis, Fla.; three brothers, Clifford Amos, of Biloxi, Miss., Carlton Amos, of Perdido, Ala., Thomas (Pam) Amos, of Atmore; two sisters, Carolyn (Jimmy) Jackson, of Atmore; Bernice (Joe) Pace, of McDavid, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Caitlan, Whitney, Britney, James, Kenny Wayne, Abby, Mary Joiner; four great-grandchildren, Lanceton, Vivian, Isabeth, Little Rudy, other relatives, and friends.

Mr. Calvin “Meatball” Johnson, age 68, of Flomaton, Ala., passed away as a result of a car accident Wednesday, January 19, 2022 in Flomaton.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Lodge Baptist Church in Century, Fla. Inhumation will be held in Bethany Cemetery in Burnt Corn (Monroe Co.) Ala.

The family will receive friends Friday, January 28, 2022 from 2 – 5 p.m. at the funeral home with Turner Funeral Chapel directing.
