J.U. Blacksher’s Tucker Spence struck out seven batters in three innings and scored three runs to help lead the Bulldogs past Monroe County 13-3 last Friday, February 28.
Spence threw 47 pitches and faced 14 batters during the game, walking none and only having one hit and run against him.
At the plate, Spence went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
Freshman Eli Smith drove in four runs; Josh Peavy scored two runs; Peyton Wilkins scored twice and stole a base; Talan Daughtry added two runs and a stolen base; Michel Redditt stole two bases and scored a run, and Damon Rolin and Jace Sells each scored a run.
Rolin and Peavy also made appearances on the mound, facing five batters each.
Rolin struck out two and allowed one run, and Peavy closed the game, striking out one batter and allowing one run.
According to JUB head coach Justin Mixon, the Bulldogs were able to get in some much-needed work during practices last week and it paid off.
“We were pleased with the team effort,” Mixon said. “Our practice drills paid off with the approaches at the plate. We are giving our young guys significant playing time and we feel that it will help the team grow as the season progresses.”
Mixon added that the mindset of the Bulldogs has improved as of late and if the new level of energy is maintained on and off the field, improvements will continue.
With the win over the Tigers, JUB now boasts a 3-1 record. The Monroe County team will have a chance at redemption this Thursday, March 5, when the Bulldogs travel to Monroeville.
