An Atmore woman was jailed December 7 after Alabama Department of Corrections agents saw her passing a package filled with illegal drugs and other contraband to her son, an inmate at G.K. Fountain Correctional Facility (FCF), just outside Atmore.
Agents from ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division (LESD) K-9 unit watched as Valerie Douglas, age not provided, passed an object to the inmate she was there to visit.
A subsequent search of the inmate resulted in the confiscation of a small package, wrapped in clear tape, which contained 30 OxyContin pills (10mg each), 20 Xanax pills (2mg each), and 5 Percocet pills (10mg each), as well as a cell phone and a cell phone charger.
Douglas was detained before she could leave the prison and was later arrested on one count each of promoting prison contraband, prohibited activities, and attempting to commit a controlled substance crime.
A conviction for attempting to commit a controlled substance crime is punished at the same level as the attempted crime, indicating the charge is a Class C felony.
Douglas was no longer listed on the Escambia County Detention Center inmate roster on Monday, December 16. Her mug shot was not available.
The investigation continues and could lead to further charges, ADOC officials said.
