On Thursday, November 21, the fifth-grade students at Rachel Patterson Elementary School were treated to a Thanksgiving feast hosted by their social studies teacher, Sheena Carach.
November is Native American Month, and students spent the month learning about different tribes, their cultures and how the Europeans treated and interacted with them. All the students wrote letters to tribes across the nation, asking questions about their culture, traditions, etc. Students also attended a viewing of “Forgotten Creeks” at The Strand Theatre.
As students learned about the first Thanksgiving, called the harvest celebration, Carach spoke to them about the true meaning of Thanksgiving, counting our blessings, and giving thanks.
The teacher coordinated with local businesses and her own family to secure donations and sponsorships which would allow her to host a Thanksgiving feast for all 80 of her students.
On November 21, Poarch Creek Indians did a demonstration for the students with their Thanksgiving meal served at noon.
The following local businesses and individuals made the event possible: Hawt Mess, PHD Realty, Baldwin Pest Control, David’s Catfish House, Popeyes, Ramey’s, Poarch Creek Indians, Glorious Creations, Nett’s Kitchen, the Carach Family.
