The Atmore Lions Club met October 16, in the Mayson Auditorium at Atmore Community Hospital.
President Lion Joyce Petty opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, followed by the prayer given by the Rev. Mike Von Keyserling.
Lion Joyce passed around sign-up sheets for the Lions booth at Williams Station Day and the food drive on November 2 at Walmart. Members were reminded of the District Cabinet Meeting on October 19 which will be held at Encore from 9 to 1. A short discussion was held concerning the Christmas parade.
Marlo Young was introduced as the founder of Prima Girls, a girls’ mentor program in Atmore for girls 10-18. Lion Joyce presented Marlo Young with a check for $1,500 to aid in the programs of the group.
Stephanie Alaniz, Escambia County Schools nurse supervisor, talked to the club about diabetic children in the schools of our county. Again this year, Lions filled diabetic boxes for students who have hypoglycemia and often need certain kinds of snacks to regulate their blood sugar levels. These boxes are placed in every classroom and school bus which those specific students are using. There are 19 such students in Escambia County, with 6 being in Atmore. Not only did Lions fill the boxes at the meeting, but their funds purchased the diabetic-specific treats put in the boxes.
The next meeting will be held November 6 at the hospital.
