Charles Edward Thomas

Mr. Charles Edward Thomas, age 89, of Fairhope, Ala., passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024. He was born in Evergreen, Ala. He was a graduate of Murphy High School in Mobile, Ala. and served in the Air Force. He retired from the State banking department after a career in finance. He provided a good life for his wife and daughters and was immensely proud of his family. An avid Alabama fan, he was especially delighted to see all four of his grandchildren graduate from there. He enjoyed bass fishing and golfing. Living with conviction and never afraid to speak his mind, Charles leaves behind a legacy of strength, determination, and deep love for his family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Martha; his daughter, Rhonda Brantley; his parents, Lola Thomas (Emmanuel) Zaphiris and Hubert Thomas.

Mr. Thomas is survived his daughter, Jennifer (Kelly) Drew; his son-in-law, Mike Brantley; his grandchildren, Shelley (Ryan) Rasinen, Jaime (Bruce) Smith, Joseph (Kasey) Drew and Stacey (Stefan) Wolf; his ten great-grandchildren; his brother, Ronald (Betty) Thomas; his sister, Louise Thomas Dukes.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Jubilee Memorial Gardens on Hwy 181 in Daphne, Ala.

Melda Cooper Torbich

Melda Cooper Torbich, age 86, of Newborn, Ga., formerly of Walnut Hill, Fla., passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty nine years, Albert Torbich; parents, Leroy Cooper and Lois Hanks Cooper. 

Mrs. Torbich is survived by her sons, Roy Torbich, Ray Torbich, Ron Torbich; grandchildren, Katie Antonion (Ben), Nicholas Torbich, Sean Torbich, Lucas Torbich; brother, “Sonny” Roy Alton Cooper. 

Funeral Services were held Sunday, October 6, 2024 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Ga. Interment followed in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, in Newborn.

The family received friends Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 1 until 3 p.m. at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home.

Donald Eugene Winingar

Mr. Donald Eugene Winingar, age 75, of McDavid, Fla. passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024. A proud veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy as a parachute rigger; was a cross-country truck driver; worked for Escambia County Roads and Bridges as a heavy equipment operator. He was passionate about antique vehicles, spending much time working on and admiring classic cars. He was a man who appreciated craftsmanship and the simple joys in life. His legacy of hard work, love for his family, and service to his country will not be forgotten.
Mr. Winingar is survived by his loving children, Carrie (Don) Fisher, Cathie (James) Hightshoe, Brian (Robin) Winingar and Kevin (Kelly) Winingar; grandchildren, Dusty, Cody, Ashley, Sara, Clint, Michael, Hannah, Bryson, Jameson, Aaron, Josiah, Phoebe, Gentry, Hadley and Macy; eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel in Atmore AL with Pastor Cathie Hightshoe officiating.

Linda Sue Wiggins

Mrs. Linda Sue Wiggins, age 67, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024 in Pensacola, Fla., a native of Pensacola and lifelong resident of Atmore, Ala. and McDavid, Fla. She found joy in fishing, visiting the creek and spending time at the beach. She enjoyed cooking, crafting homemade candies and baking cakes. She enjoyed planting flowers and witnessing their growth and vibrant blooms. Her beloved pets held a special place in her heart. Additionally, she enjoyed traveling to the mountains and enjoyed sewing while sharing precious moments with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by mother and father, Pete Jarman and Mary Peacock; husband of many years, Jimmy Robert Wiggins Sr.; three sisters, Felicia Jarman, Patricia Wiggins and Brenda Peacock.
Mrs. Wiggins is survived by her daddy, Harold Peacock of Atmore; son, Jimmy Robert (Jennifer) Wiggins, Jr. of McDavid; daughter, Charlotte McGhee of Perdido, Ala.; two fur babies, Hot Rod and Baby;  brothers, Raymond Simmons of Pensacola and Bo Simmons of Milton, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Timothy Wiggins, Jimmy Wiggins, Henry Wiggins, Gabby McGhee, Nathan Wiggins, Haley Wiggins and Levi McGhee; four great-grandchildren, Aiden Wiggins, Jasper Wiggins, Silas Wiggins and Colton Wiggins; significant other, Roger Thomas of McDavid.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 14, 2024 at Noon at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC. with Rev. Buford Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow at Godwin Cemetery.

Carolyn Aniece Sutton Settle Thompson

Mrs. Carolyn Aniece Sutton Settle Thompson, age 84, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024. She was born to Adolph Sutton, Sr. and Olbia Ouida Patterson Sutton in Albany N.Y. Her family relocate to Atmore, Ala. where she graduated from Escambia County High School in 1957.

Suffering from Alzheimer’s, heart issues landed her in the hospital, her daughters with her through her illness. Discharge day to a rehabilitation facility, found her watching movies with the nurses, colored, cut out hearts, corrected a nurse on the difference between a hog and a pig (always the teacher), and went to lie down in her room where quietly left this earth. A peaceful exit to a full life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Adolph “Doc” Sutton, Jr. and her son-in-law, Edward J. McDonagh.  

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her beloved daughters, Kimberly Anita McDonagh and Elizabeth Ashley Lemieux; grandchildren, Jean-Michael Lemieux (Autumn), Philip Kabatt (Jenna), Lauren Lemieux (Wesley), Gideon Kabatt, Jarrett-Robert Lemieux and Liam McDonagh; great-granddaughters, Quinn Lemieux, Veda and Isla Kabatt; her brother, Robert Sutton (MaryAnn); sister, Ouida Tartt; cousins, nieces, nephews and valuable friends that were family.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, October 14, 2024 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Ms. Pamela Denise Williams, age 53, of New Orleans, La., formerly of Atmore, Ala. will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Gaines Chapel AME Church. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Bernice Duncan “Mee Maw” Respress, age 97, of Atmore, AL passed away in Century, Fla.  She was born in Opp, Ala. to Robert Levi and Rosa Lee Reeves Duncan.  She attended First Baptist Church of Atmore and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Clayton Chapter #306, Huxford, Ala. since 1959 serving as secretary from 1959 until 2011. She was employed with the Escambia County Alabama Tax Collector’s Probate Office.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvis Respress and her siblings, Tom Duncan, Dow Duncan, Arrona Norris, Rudell Thomas and Brunize Parish. 

Mrs. Respress is survived by her son, Benny Alvin (Bobbie) Respress of Atmore; her grandchildren, Leslie (Ray) Sellers and Tyler (Ashley) Respress and her great- grandchildren, Jackson Sellers, Myles Sellers, Sara Respress and Kara Respress.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kevin Garrett officiating.  Interment will follow in Serenity Gardens in Atmore.

Pallbearers will be Ray Sellers, Jackson Sellers, Kenny Duncan, Jerry Parish, Joey Parish and John Hassebrock.

Mother Mary Peoples Dennis, age 98. Of Atmore, Ala. passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024. She served faithfully in her church, Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, as the Mother of her Congregation, as a called servant of God, also as a Missionary, until she became disabled.

She loved her Pastor, First Lady, Gods children, brothers, sisters and all saints of Jesus Christ, also especially her Missionary Society.

Mother Mary Dennis is survived by Dorothy Peoples Adams, Evandel Peoples, Cheryl Dennis Williams, Delois Dennis Butler, Nathaniel Dennis and Kathy Dennis.

Home going Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael L. Wilson, Pastor officiating.

Roger Martine Orth

Dr. Roger Martine Orth, M.D., age 73, of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024. He was born in La Grange, Ill. to Frederick William Orth and Marguerite Colombe Martine. He graduated from Tulane University Medical School. He devoted his life to medicine, serving as a dedicated gastroenterologist for many years. He found peace in nature, especially in fishing, and developed a special bond with Harold, a great blue heron he often saw by Bayou Texar. His wisdom, trailblazing contributions to medicine, and the personal touches he brought to every relationship will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, and patients.

Dr. Orth is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Maner; his siblings, Fred (Cheri) and Eileen (Cliff); his children, Roger (Ashley), Robyn (Surya) and Ashton (Brett);   five grandchildren (affectionately known to them as “Roro”), Eleanor, Magnolia, Tara, William and Avi.

A Memorial Celebration will be held Thursday, October 17, 2024 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Pensacola, Fla. with a reception to follow.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 5 -7 p.m. at The Consulate, First United Methodist Church, 2 E. Wright St., Pensacola.
