Luncheon celebrates Bastille Day

Special to Atmore News

On July 13, as a way to remember the visit to Paris with her husband, Charles, 50 years ago on July 14, 1974, to celebrate Bastille Day, Nancy Karrick entertained five Daughters of the American Revolution ladies in her home for a Bastille Day celebration. Attending were Bonnie Shanks from Montgomery, Laura Davis from Spanish Fort, Mary Flo Williams from Stockton, Cathy Irby from Booneville, and Linda Ellison from Atmore.
The ladies were greeted by French Bastille flags, Parisian decorations. and a table set with the French colors of blue, white, and red. White plates on red chargers were adorned with hand stitched Paris cityscapes on the white linen napkins. Table adornments were Eiffel Towers of varying colors and sizes, along with individual blue vases containing red and white flowers.
The meal consisted of a salad of asparagus forming the shape of an Eiffel Tower on a bed of butter lettuce, accompanied by hearts of palm and petite towers cut from beets. The salad was served with cheese straw Eiffel Tower shaped crackers. The main course was chicken tarragon with potatoes, carrots, and pearl onions, French onion soup casserole, baked apricots, and polenta-rosemary madeleines. Dessert was a chocolate Eiffel Tower shaped personal cake on a layer of chocolate sauce, with whipped cream and a pink chocolate Eiffel Tower. Hot Earl Gray tea in Eiffel Tower shaped tea bags was served with dessert.
Following lunch, the ladies discussed the upcoming Lafayette tour through our part of Alabama in the spring and potential trips and projects they could participate in.
In addition to a lovely meal and an enjoyable visit together, a good time was had by all.
