Willie Wayne McCurdy

Mr. Willie Wayne “Running Bear” McCurdy, age 72, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Atmore, Ala. and a proud member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. He was an avid hunter and loved fishing as well. Riding his tractor and tending to the hunting club and being in the woods was something he loved. Loved watching westerns; riding his horses; was an avid Alabama fan; enjoyed listening to phone ads, planting a garden and being able to share it with family and friends. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially during the holidays.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie (Annie Maude Presley) McCurdy; sister, Dorothy Annette Lane; son, Emmett James Sawyer.

Mr. McCurdy is survived by his loving wife of thirty-seven years, Mavis McCurdy of Atmore; son, Thomas (Heather) Sawyer of Excel, Ala.; five daughters, Angela (Jim) McMorris of Flomaton, Ala., Connie (Tony) Lambeth and Becky (Bradley) Woods, all of Atmore, Melinda (Chris) Kimbrel of Bratt, Fla. and Lori (Troy) Nelson of Summerdale, Ala.; one sister, Annie Ree Stough of Atmore; nineteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 18, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC. with Rev. Bubba Rolin officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 18, 2024, from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Petty Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes LLC.

Pallbearers will be Josh Brown, Jayce Sells, Tommy Pickern, Ethan Pickern, Ryan Albritton and Wayne Martin.

Lee Bernice Purvis 

Mrs. Lee Bernice Purvis, age 100, of Bratt, Fla. passed away Friday, March 15, 2024 in Jay, Fla. She was born in Tallahatta Springs, Ala. to Occie Phillips and Shady Lee Williams. She served during World War II at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. assembling airplanes to be used in combat. She and her husband began their farm after the war focusing on dairy farming and then expanded to row-cropping until her husband’s retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Purvis; her son, Steve Purvis; her sister, Mable Gantner; two brothers, J.E. Phillips and W.V. Phillips, and her daughter-in-law, Susan Fillingim Purvis.  

Mrs. Purvis is survived by her sons, Gary (Ginger) Purvis of Bratt and Mike (Cathy) Purvis of Blountstown, Fla.; her grandchildren, Gary Wayne (Monica) Purvis, Sharon (Mark) Delmar, Brad (Nicole) Purvis and Ashley (John David) House; her daughter-in-law, LaVonne Purvis Swindel; her sister, Margaret McCullough of Walnut Hill, Fla.; her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Delmar, Brandon (Mallory) Purvis, Colton (Hannah) Purvis, Barrett Purvis and Harper House; her great-great-grandchildren, Adaline and Oliver Purvis along with many other special family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Godwin Cemetery in Bratt, FL.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 12 Noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore, AL.

Joe Hazley

Mr. Joe (J.C.) Hazley, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, March 11, 2024, at Mobile Infirmary, Mobile, Ala.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 25, 2024 at 2 p.m. at New Beginning Christian Center.

The family will receive friends Sunday, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel.
