Patricia Ann Garrett

Ms. Patricia Ann Garrett, age 77, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021. She was born in Georgiana, Ala. to Obie Leon and Eva Lucille Jernigan Cobb and was a seamstress most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, James Leon Pettie. 

Ms. Garrett is survived by her sons, William R. Pettie and Thomas Wilton Pettie of Brewton, Ala.; her daughters, Patricia Diane (Randy) Williamson of Land O’Lakes, Fla., Deborah Faye (John) Flournoy of Autaugaville, Ala., Darlene Pettie Anthony of Brewton and Delanor Dale (Richard) Odom of Bay Minette, Ala.; her brother, William Cobb of Georgiana; her sisters, Shirley Green and Opal Cobb, both of Georgiana, Ala.; eleven grandchildren; numerous great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. 

A memorial service was held Wednesday, January 20, 2021 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Georgiana Pentecostal Church, 313 Maranda Avenue, Georgiana, Ala.

Toney Gibson

Gibson

Mr. Toney Gibson, age 71, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021 in Atmore, Ala. He was a native of Atmore, former resident of Biloxi, Miss. and had resided in Poarch, Ala. for the past sixteen years. He was a retired Union Pipe Liner, loved to fish, shoot pool and Alabama Football. He was a Tom Brady Fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Ida Gibson; two sons, Rodney Gibson and Toney Gibson; two sisters and three brothers.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his two daughters, Tracy Gibson and Alice Janene Gibson, both of New Orleans, La.; three brothers, Ricky Gibson, Larry Gibson and Jerry (Connie) Gibson, all of Atmore, Ala.; thirteen grandchildren, Gavin, Toni, Antonio, Tregan, Makayla, Talissia, Toney, Tameron, Daniel, Rodney, Christopher, Christian and Takoda; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. 

Graveside services were held Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Cemetery with Bro. Trevor Daughtry officiating. 

The family received friends Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home. 

Pallbearers were Antonio Walls, Tregan McCreight, Greg Gibson, Carson Griffith, Derick Grosskurth, Gavin Bourgeois and Ricky Maddox.

James “Ray” Archer

Mr. James “Ray” Archer, age 82, passed away Monday, January 18, 2021 in Atmore, Ala. He was a native of Robertsdale, Ala., former resident of Pensacola, Fla. and had resided in Atmore for the past sixteen years. He was a brake and alignment mechanic for forty-three years, in the Pensacola area. He loved fishing, hunting, country music, singing, playing his guitar and telling jokes. He was a member of True Hope Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Randal Ray Archer. 

Mr. Archer is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Kathryn “Kay” McGhee Archer of Atmore; one son, Rodney Archer of Pensacola; step-children, Richard Crosby of Seattle, Wash., Terry Crosby Vega of Newnan, Ga., and Gerald Crosby of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Lowell Archer and Billy (Frances) Archer, both of Cantonment, Fla.; special step-grandson, Luke Vega of Newnan, Ga.; special step-granddaughter, Bama Coburn of Atmore; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren and many friends. 

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

William A. Gorum, Sr.

Mr. William A. Gorum, Sr., age 94, of Huxford, Ala. passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021. He was known as PawPaw to his family and friends. He retired from Huxford Junior High School as the principal for 33 years. He was a member of Huxford Baptist Church for over fifty years. He taught a Sunday school class and was a deacon for over forty years. His accomplishments include membership in Local Lodge 779;  Eastern Star;.32nd Degree Scottish Rite, was a York Rite and obtained all degrees; a Korean War Veteran; helped organize the Huxford Volunteer Fire Department; was chairman of the Steering Committee for the Alabama State Forest, District 7; helped organize the Escambia County Volunteer Firefighting of Alabama serving as Vice-President.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel Lucile Gorum; and his sister, Flora Gorum. 

Mr. Gorum is survived by his children, William A. Gorum, Jr. (Wanda), Gilbert Gorum, Judy Hines (Billy), Cindy Weldon, David Gorum (Tammy), Danny Gorum (Linda); grandchildren, Lindsey Gorum, Aaron Gorum, Megan French, Josh Gorum, Rachel Segrest, Will Hines, Brent Weldon, Jr., Ryan Gorum, Logan Gorum, Daniel Gorum, Amber Melton and Brett Gorum; great-grandchildren, Ellie Gorum, Emory French, Chase Gorum, Katelyn Gorum, Ethan Segrest, Audrey Segrest, Anna Segrest, William Weldon, Creed Gorum, Jessie Risher, Ansley Risher, Connor Gorum, Nolan Gorum and Bryant Melton; brothers, Raymond Gorum (Mary Alice) and Marvin Gorum and sisters, Lois Bennett, Lucy Nell Berry (Lee Ray) and Barbara Mitchell (Sam). 

Graveside service was held Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Huxford Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Billy Hodges officiating.  

Active pallbearers were Aaron Gorum, Josh Gorum, Will Hines, Brent Weldon, Jr., Ryan Gorum, Daniel Gorum, Logan Gorum and Brett Gorum.

Richard Billy Hunter

Mr. Richard Billy Hunter, age 32, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021 in Shreveport, La. Mr. Hunter was a native of Pensacola, Fla., former resident of Walnut Hill, Fla. and had resided in Bay Minette, Ala. for the past fourteen years. He was a chef with several restaurants on the Gulf Coast and an over the road truck driver with Flat Creek Transportation Company from Kinston, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Billy Ray Gipson and Richard Dale Hunter.

Mr. Hunter is survived by his mother, Donna (John) Trahan of Bay Minette; father, Daniel (Kay) Hunter of Bratt, Fla.; grandmothers, Alice Faye Hunter of Bratt and Bobbie Heard of Pensacola, Fla.; one daughter, Brooklyn Hunter of Loxley, Ala.; one brother, Daniel Hunter, Jr. of Bay Minette; two sisters, Erica (Jamie) McMillan of Katy, Texas, and Crystal (Jonathan) Bossard of Bratt, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Betty “Jo” Bexley

Mrs. Betty “Jo” Bexley, age 61, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2021 at her home in Irvington, Ala. She was a native of Mobile, Ala., former resident of Atmore, Ala. and had resided in Irvington for the past twenty years. She was a proud member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. She loved to cook and take care of her family and friends. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Genese McCraney; two brothers, Doug McCraney and Jerry McCraney, and grandson, Seth Garrett.
Mrs. Bexley is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Robert W. Bexley of Irvington; three sons, Chris (Pam) Garrett, J.J. Bexley and Sebasten “Bobo” Bexley, all of Irvington; three step-sons, Jeremy Bexley, Michael Bexley and Matthew (Judy) Bexley, all of Mobile, Ala.; one daughter, Sabrina Garrett of Atmore; five sisters, Ann (Wayne) Waddell of Philadelphia, Miss., Bobbie (Billy) Walker of Semmes, Ala., Rita Ikner (Ricky) of Frisco City, Ala., Debbie Fullbright and Jan Powell, all of Atmore; eight grandchildren, Mikey Mason, Kari Mason, Makayla Garrett, C.J. Garrett, Kyle Garrett, Abigail Bexley, Robert Thomas Bexley and Zadie Bexley; two great-grandchildren, Aidan Caraway and Micah Mason, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Earl Harrison officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Shelia J. Walker, age 62, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, January 22, 2021 at the Atmore Community Hospital.

Vivian Ann Carstarphen-Douglass

Mrs. Vivian Ann Carstarphen-Douglass, age 58, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, January 18, 2021. She was born in Coy, Ala., to Winnie R. Carstarphen and Katie Lee Carstarphen (Mallard). She and her parents moved to Atmore and later to Westbury, N.Y. when she went to school and obtained her GED and trained to become a CNA and worked in several health facilities. After two failed marriages and two children she relocated to Schenectady, N.Y. and went on to graduate from Nursing School and obtaining her Nursing Degree. She and her husband relocated to Atmore. Her nieces and nephews knew that Aunt Viv would be there for them. She enjoyed Sunday drives with her husband, tending her plants and fruit trees and cooking for her family. She was fond of dancing. She would say, “I’m all right as long as Kelise is al1 right (her only grand-daughter.)” She became ill and fought a courageous battle for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Winnie and Katie Carstarphen, and brother, Peter Knight.

Mrs. Carstarphen-Douglass is survived by her husband, Richard Douglass of Atmore; two daughters, Katrina Renee Carstarphen of East Greenbush, N.W., and Kelsie Mariah Ebony Webb of Atmore; six sisters and two brothers, Rebecca (Albert) Nichols, James Allen Knight, Mamie (James) Walker, Major James Knight, Lillie Bell Knight, Mary Jane Andrews and Essiemariah Carstarphen, all of Atmore, and Sadie (Garnett) McKinley of Westbury, N.Y.; granddaughter, Kelise Ann Marie Webb; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Loree B. Ambrose

Mrs. Loree B. Ambrose, age 75, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021 while residing with her brother, Larry Hall of Birmingham, Ala. She was born in Atmore to Jeff and Ruby Mae Hall. She began her Christian life with Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, later renamed Pleasant Hill Full Gospel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Issac Ambrose; her parents; five brothers, John Lee Hall, Johnnie E. Hall, Jeff Hall, Jr., Herman Hall and Jeff C. Hall; three sisters, Mary Helen Dortch, Mable Thompson and Carrie Riley; three brothers-in-law, Sammie Dortch, Deacon Roy Thompson and Willie Lee Riley.

Mrs. Ambrose is survived by three sisters, Mattie Hall, Linda Sheffield, Zulema (Robert) Johnson of Dayton, Ohio; Larry Hall of Birmingham of Birmingham and Clarence (Joanie) Hall of Dayton; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and a special nephew, Javarus Hall.

Graveside services were held Friday, January 22, 2021 at Fairview Cemetery with Bishop Willie L. Williams eulogist.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Alma Craig Thomas

Mrs. Alma Craig Thomas, age 90, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021. She was a native of Marengo County, Dixon Mills, Ala. and a lifelong resident of Atmore. She was a woman of great faith and a servant at heart. She was a working woman and was employed by Bartel’s, Greenlawn Hospital, Vanity Fair and Monsanto Textiles. She passionately served in her church and gave great support for her pastors. She was active in her community and if there were a need she gave to it. When facing challenging situations, she lived by: If you’re tired, put it down, pray about it, go to bed and God will show you how to get it done on the next day.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Alice Craig; sisters, Ethel Hayes and Climiteen Hopson; brothers, Gaius Craig and Willie Booker; parents-in-law, Tom and Buneia Mae Smith; husband, Ernest L. Thomas; and daughter-in-law, Ruth Landis Thomas. 

Missionary Thomas is survived by a brother, Neolin (Catherine) Craig; a sister, Orion James; sister-in-law, Rosie Mae Johnson; sons, Floyd and John Thomas; daughters, Ernestine Fountain and Annette (Julius) Haston; daughters-in-law, Corliss and Stephanie Thomas; devoted daughter, Curlie Newkirk; Godchildren, Joe and Sarah Giles and family; prayer partner and friend, Missionary Dorothy Brazzell; her joy, twenty-three grandchildren; forty-two great-grands, eleven great-great-grands, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Michael L. Wilson, officiating. Interment followed at Pierce Rabb Cemetery.

Betty Jean Robinson

Mrs. Betty Jean Robinson, age 76, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021. She was born to Elma Williams and Jessie McCants. She was a 1962 graduate of Escambia County Training School. She spent many years in Boston, Mass. In 1990 she and her husband decided to retire and live in Atmore. She reunited with her home church, Greater Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, she was a member and supporter of many of the church programs.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; siblings, Clint McCants, Alfred McCants and Carolyn McCants.                                    

Mrs. Robinson is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, Jessie Robinson; two children, Alfred (Rosiea) and Brenda (Thomas); six grandchildren, James, Jayla, Gregory, Aliyah, twins, Brendan and Brianna; one great-grandchildren, Mia, all of Boston, Mass.; brother-in-law, Frank James Robinson of Union Springs, Ala.; sister-in-law, Emma Nelson of Wetumpka, Ala.; special nieces, Nancy Ellis (Chris), Denise Brown (Chris), Edna Robinson; nephew, Leon McCants; dearest cousins, Barbara Bizor, Edward Lambert (Elouise); sister-in-law, Ann McNeal; extended family, Voncile Stallworth, Dorothy McCorvey; stepbrother and sisters, Marva Perkins, Esser Bert (Delois) Fairley, Kayreene (Michael) Robinson, Douglas (Sharon) Fairley, Cynthia Fairley, Randy Fairley, Armesia Harris; friends, Moses (Jeanette) Dailey and Robert (Ruby Nell) White. 

Graveside Funeral services were held Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Lucious Cemetery with Rev. W. J. Hawthorne, Sr., officiating, Pastor of Greater Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.
