Local numbers continue to climb

According to the January 5 report issued by Escambia County Healthcare Authority, 224 new cases have been confirmed among Escambia County residents since December 29. Statewide, almost 28,000 (27,789) new cases have been reported since December 29, bringing Alabama’s total to 379,593.
Atmore Community Hospital has now collected 845 samples that tested positive for the novel coronavirus, up 68 from the December 29 numbers, while D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in Brewton has how collected 403, an increase of 28 over the December 29 totals.
The county’s death toll remains at 34 out of 2,819 confirmed cases. Overall, ACH has administered 3,785 tests, while DWM has administered 1,877.
Local nursing homes saw their first new cases in several weeks, according to data provided by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, although the data is only through the week ended December 20.
Neither Atmore Nursing Home nor West Gate Village in Brewton reported any new cases among residents, but one new case was reported among an ANC staff member, bringing that facility’s total to 24, and WGV reported three new cases among its staff, bringing to 45 the number of staffers who tested positive.
No new deaths were reported in either facility, leaving ANC’s total at 7 and WGV’s at 8.
