In a typical year, dozens of folks would gather Memorial Day at the Veterans Monument at City Hall and honor those who have passed away in service to their country.
This Memorial Day, observed next Monday, May 25, there will be no gathering and no ceremony due to the coronavirus epidemic.
Atmore VFW Post 7016 Commander Billy Gates issued the following statement last week:
“The VFW has decided that for the safety of all, we will not host a Memorial Day program this year. However, we do request that you remember all veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice of service to America.
“Visit our monument in front of city hall and pray for our country and the families who lost loved ones …
“Stay safe.”
