Tracy “Buck” Steadham

Mr. Tracy “Buck” Steadham, age 52, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 in Pensacola, Fla. He was a native of Atmore, Ala., raised in Chumuckla, Fla. and lived in Flomaton, Ala. for most of his life. He had resided in Century, Fla. for the past five years. He was a 1986 graduate of Flomaton High School and a lineman with Escambia River Electric Co-op with over thirty years of service. He was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He was of the Southern Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bub and Lucille Steadham, Eva Mae Grissett and Arvin Silcox; two uncles, Winston Steadham and Clyde Steadham and one aunt, Virginia McKelvain.

Mr. Steadham is survived by his father, Carl E. Steadham of Bay Minette, Ala.; mother, Jo Ann Green of Flomaton; wife of thirty-one years, his high school sweetheart, Kathy Steadham of Century; two sons, Army E-4 Specialist, Wesley (Carissa) Steadham of Clarksville, Tenn. and Army E-4 Specialist, Casey (Victoria) Steadham of Watertown, N.Y.; one daughter, LeAnn Steadham of Walnut Hill, Fla.; one brother, Stacey “Pete” (Christy) Steadham of Bay Minette,; one grandchild, Emerson Grant Steadham; numerous aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Flomaton with Rev. Tim Tew officiating. Burial followed at Flomaton Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday, July 12, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Flomaton.

Pallbearers were Wesley Steadham, Casey Steadham, Pete Steadham, Brandon Smith, Kyle Strickland and David Dees.

Honorary pallbearers were his co-workers and fellow lineman.

Gwnette Berry

Mrs. Gwnette Berry, age 84, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at her home in Bratt, Fla. She was a native of Chestnut Grove, Ala. and had resided in Bratt since 1953. She retired from Vanity Fair with seventeen years of service. She was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Wilkins; her father and step-mother, Shelby and Lettie Wilkins; husband, Colon Berry and son, Everette Berry.

Mrs. Berry is survived by her three sons, Ervin Berry and Travis (Patsy) Berry, all of Davisville, Fla. and Sammy (Laura) Berry of Bratt; two sisters, Annie Ruth Flanigan of Albany, Ga. and Sally Carmichael of Baton Rogue, La.; ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Minister Brad Sullivan officiating. Burial followed at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Thursday, July 11, 2019 from 9 a.m. until service time at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Travis Harrison, Frank Smar, Tyson Smar, Justin Smar, Nathan Smar and James Sullivan.

Thomas Wesley Dean

Mr. Thomas Wesley Dean, age 61, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 in Bay Minette, Ala. He was a native of Bay Minette, former resident of Texas and Atlanta and had resided in Perdido, Ala. for the past seven years. He served in the oil field for twenty years as a seismographic supervisor and twenty years as a logger in various capacities. He was a member of the Perdido Masonic Lodge #752.

Mr. Dean is survived by his mother, Christine Patterson of Bay Minette; wife of forty-two years, Kathy R. Dean of Perdido; two sons, Jason Thomas (Melissa) Dean of Texarkana, Texas and Kevin (Sandra) Dean of Perdido; one sister, Terri (Butch) Purvis of Saraland, Ala. and nine grandchildren, Jackson, Victoria, Nelson, Norah, Kobe, Lucieanna, Phillip, Isabella and Caleb.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 12, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Chris Pruitt officiating. Burial followed at Brown Cemetery.

The family received friends Thursday, July 11, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

John Michael “Mike” Garrard

Mr. John Michael “Mike” Garrard, age 65, of Cantonment, Fla., passed away Saturday, July 6, 2019, in Pensacola, Fla. He was born in Atmore, Ala., to the late John and Fonda Solomon Garrard, Jr. He had recently retired from his lifelong career in the healthcare/medical field.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Fonda and a granddaughter, Lucy Howard.

Mr. Garrard is survived by his wife, Gail Blankenbeck Garrard of Ohio; two daughters, Kelly (Rusty) Howard of Allen, Texas and Lori Beth (Michael) Diller of Walnut Hill, Fla.; one brother, David Garrard of Pensacola; a step-son, Blaine (Christina) McFarland of Ohio; a step-daughter, Dana (Tony) Campise of Ohio and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 2 p.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Mrs. Alice Ruth Gates, age 74, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 in Mobile, Ala. She was a native and former resident of Atmore, Ala. and had resided in Walnut Hill, Fla. for the past forty years. Her home was open to all; her favorite was cooking and raising babies. She was a member of the Antioch Free Will Baptist Church in Nokomis, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Alice Davis; son, Martin R. “Buddy” Lassitter; three sisters, Eloise Isaacks, Joyce Osborne and Catherine Davis and two brothers, Roy Davis and Jesse Davis.

Mrs. Gates is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Robert Lee Gates, Jr. of Walnut Hill; two daughters, Rebel Gates of Walnut Hill and Linda Lassitter Hamilton of Panama City, Fla.; three brothers, Jimmy Davis of Century, Fla., Emmette Davis of Montgomery, Ala. and Billy (Diane) Davis of Monroeville, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Lauren Peabody, Tabitha Nelson, Russell Lassitter, Tosha Lassitter, Hannah Hamilton, Haden Howard (he was a caregiver and always by her side) and Martina Howard; fourteen great-grandchildren, Olivia, Kolen, Konner, McKinzie, Bentley, Asaisha, Kylie, Brycen, Summer, Russell, Reese, Bowen, Riley and Rosa Lee and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Alan Chase officiating. Burial followed at Antioch Free Will Baptist Cemetery.

Thomas Lee Pitman, Sr.

Bro. Thomas Lee Pitman, Sr., age 83, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019 in Chatom, Ala. He was a native of Milton, Fla, served in the US Air Force, Army and FEMA, retiring with over thirty years of service to his country. He and Mrs. Eva helped to establish churches from Alaska to various states in the South Eastern United States. Bro. Pitman served as pastor at several churches, retiring from Halsell Church of The Lord Jesus Christ in Halsell, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Gladys Pittman; two brothers, Jim Pittman and Billy Pittman and a sister, Glenda McCraney.

Bro. Pitman is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Eva Lou Bell Pitman of Chatom; two sons, Tommy Pitman, Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. and Donnie Pitman of Jackson, Ala.; three daughters, Eva Jane (Joe) King of Jacksonville, Rhonda Jo (Mike) Goldman of St. Stephens, Ala. and Sandi (Jimmy) Chancey of Grove Hill, Ala.; two brothers, Bobby (Blanche) Pittman of Pensacola, Fla. and Ronnie Pittman of Milton, Fla.; one sister, Isabelle Androw of Pensacola; eight grandchildren, Holly Clayton, Jeweli Mallory, Chad Pitman, Michael Goldman, Caleb McDuff, Jonathan King, Daniel King and Thomas Hicks and six great-grandchildren, Caley Clayton, Bethany Clayton, Evan Clayton, Madalynn Pitman, Noah Pitman and Jeremiah Pitman.

Mr. James Alan Holsonback, age 60, of Poarch, Ala., passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in Mobile, Ala. He was a factory worker. He was born in Atmore, Ala. to the late James Duward and Laura DeWise Holsonback.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Laura Faye Holsonback; brother, Joseph Holsonback.

Hr. Holsonback is survived by his wife, Jennifer Forsythe Holsonback of Poarch; one son,

Mrs. Velma Aline Covan, age 79, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019 in Milton, Fla.  She was a native of Quitman, Miss., a resident of Century, Fla. for sixty-three years and had resided in Milton for the past year. She was a member of the Jay Chapter #208 of the Order of Eastern Star where she served as past grand matron. She was a member of New Life Fellowship Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Coy and Velma Blackburn; husband, Willie Morris Covan; two sons, Ronnie Hayes and Randy Covan and a sister, Margaret Levine Jones.

Mrs. Covan is survived by her son, Radford (Tina) Covan of Pace, Fla.; daughter, Recindia (Buck) McCormick of Milton; brother, Sherman (Pat) Glover of Byrneville, Fla.; fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Lavon Caraway officiating. Burial followed at Providence Cemetery, Georgiana, Ala.

Mr. Tim Allen Kimmons, age 57, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019 in Mobile, Ala. He was a native of Century, Fla., former resident of Brewton, Ala. and Flomaton, Ala. where he spent most of his life and had resided in Range, Ala. for the past five years. He was an automobile painter and loved stock car racing. He was a member of the Ebenezer Church.
Mr. Kimmons is survived by his mother, Claudeen Kimmons of Range; four brothers, Charles (Kathy) Kimmons and Donnie (Linda) Kimmons, all of Pensacola, Bernie (Shelia) Kimmons of Cedar Bluff, Ala. and Douglas (Melinda) Kimmons of Andalusia, Ala.; one sister, Cindy (Jesse) Burch of Range and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Lily Brunette Weaver Williams, age 89, of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Saturday,
July 13, 2019 at her residence. She was a registered nurse. She was born in Purdue Hill,
Ala. to the late R.B. Winston and Minnie Bertha Brantley Weaver. She was a member of Myrtle Grove Baptist Church, and was very active in the community.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Williams, Jr.; a son, James
Williams, III; two brothers, Edward “Tommie” Weaver and Walter Scott Weaver.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her granddaughter, Whitney Danielle Williams (Jonathan) Roden of Huntsville, Ala.; sister, Bonnie Gilda Weaver Quinley of Pensacola; great-nieces and nephews, Winston Scott (Arlene) Weaver of Madison, Ala., Caitlin Weaver (David) Luna of Birmingham, Ala., Hannah Weaver (Tyjuan) Bryant of Huntsville, Ala.; great-great nieces and nephews, Lathan Luna and Laynie Luna.

Isham Gordon “I.G.” Nichols, Jr.

Mr. Isham Gordon “I.G.” Nichols, Jr., age 85, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019 in Mobile, Ala. He was born in Burnt Corn, Ala. to the late Isham Gordon Nichols, Sr. and Velma Johnson Nichols. He attended Auburn University (A.P.I) and was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Atmore. He owned and operated Nichols Department Store for many years before retiring. He had served as a councilman with the City of Amore and was a past President of the Atmore Jaycees.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce C. Nichols and a sister Frances Nichols Black.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his children, Randell “Randy” G. Nichols, Sr. and wife, Melissa of Atmore and Scarlet Nichols Strom and husband Greg of Monroeville, Ala.; four grandchildren, Sterling Strom (Cory) Carter, Randell Gordon, Jr., Ann Walton Nichols and Anna Catherine Strom.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. at Patterson Chapel at First Baptist Church of Atmore with Rev. Kevin L. Garrett officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

James Laster

Mr. James Laster, age 82, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Monday, July 8, 2019. He was born in Atmore to the late Edgar and Cladie (McCorvey) Laster, Sr. He was a member Greater Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Escambia County Training School and then joined the United States Army. He was in construction work in New York for many years and then Detroit, Mich. Working at Eastern Market as a forklift driver. He then returned to Atmore where he spent time with family and friends enjoying fishing, western movies, sports and working crossword puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Melvin, Edgar Jr., Carl, Charles, Nora, Lucy, Jacquline and great-granddaughter, Mica A. Jones.

Mr. Laster is survived by one son Michael (Delois) Wilson, Sr.; five grandchildren, Michelle (Layton) Frye, Michael (Jo Anna) Wilson, Jr., Derrick (Rihana) Mason, Janet Wilson, James (Latressa) Wilson, Sr.; seventeen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren all of Atmore; one adopted brother, Willie James Buford; a host of nieces and nephews; special niece and nephews, Lenora Laster and Eric and Tony Brown; God-children, Sharon Worthy, Honolulu, HI, Sandra Renee Jones, Sacramento, Ca., Shaqunia Kyles and Roderick McDowell, both of Atmore;  dedicated friend, Paul Ikner, Atmore and faithful cousin, Willie Frank McCorvey of Pensacola, Fla.

Ms. Brenda F. Johnson, age 53, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019. She was born to Ms. Bessie M. Johnson. She was a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church serving as a door greeter and usher. She was a proud 1987 Escambia County High School graduate. After graduating, she became one of the best caretakers in the business! She helped diligently with all the chores in the household, especially rearing the Johnson’s family off spring, she was a jewel in that department. She worked endlessly in the household, community and neighborhood.

Ms. Johnson is survived by her mother, Ms. Bessie M. Johnson; sister, Joann (Don) Jefferson; brothers, Willie Charles, Robert, Pastor Allen (Tenesha) and Nicholas (Lawan) Johnson; grandmother, Mrs. Beatrice Johnson; special uncle, Reverend  Jacob (Yvonne) Archie and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends, one special friend, Vanessa Rothchild.

Carl Brown

Mr. Carl Brown, age 54, of Brewton, Ala., passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019. He was born in Brewton to Louise B. Miller (Thomas) and the late Herman C. Nettles, Sr. He was a graduate of T.R. Miller High School participating in basketball and football. He received his Associates Degree at Jefferson Davis Community College and was an employee at T.R. Miller Lumber Mill Company and Brewton Iron Works. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Methodist Church. After relocating to Mobile, Ala. in 1994 he returned to Brewton in 1998 to care for his grandmother and sister. He enjoyed carpentry, basketball, cooking, grilling and music.

He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Robert J. Brown, Rosie Mae Green and Naomi Nettles; sisters, JoAnn Vickers and Daphne Sapphire and brothers, Sean Miller, John Miller and Thomas W. Miller, Jr.

Mr. Brown is survived by his mother, Louise Miller (Thomas) of Brewton; daughter, Kaneesha Stallworth of Talladega, Ala.; sisters, Carol Brown and Mary L. Brown, both of Brewton; brothers, Herman C. Nettles, Jr. (Demetria) of Brewton, Rev. Billy Nettles (Regina) of Palmdale, Ca., Jeffery Miller (Renee) of Columbus, Ga. and Christopher Miller of Brewton; grandmothers, Mable Brown of Pensacola, Fla. and Jimmie Lee Miller of Panama City, Fla.; great friend, supporter and companion, Brenda Brown as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, two great-nieces, three great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Lonnie Albert Nettles

Mr. Lonnie Albert Nettles, age 72, of Atmore (Freemanville Community), Ala., passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Atmore Community Hospital He was born in Halsell, Ala. He worked in the pulpwood industry until retirement. He love gardening, fishing and talking.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ardelia Nettles.

Mr. Nettles is survived by three children, Debra Dixon of Butler, Ala., Cathy Bush of Mich., Arcelious (Natasha) Cherry of Houston, Texas and seven grandchildren; four brothers, Aaron Nettles, O’Neil (Felicia) Nettles, David Nettles and Carl Nettles, all of Mobile, Ala.; four sisters, Christine Nettles, Anna Nettles, Ardenia Richardson and Lethia Turner, All of Mobile; host of nieces, nephews, cousins and one devoted cousin, Mary Barnes and friends; two very loyal friends, Mashal Gulley and Clifford E. Montgomery.

Tommy Roy Finklea

Mr. Tommy Roy Finklea, age 62, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Atmore Community Hospital. He was born in Wilcox County, Ala. He was a member of Second Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church. He was a professional painter and loved painting cars.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Monique Hawthorne and a brother, Robert (Geraldine) Phillips.

Mr. Finklea is survived by his wife, Shelly Hawthorne Finklea; brother, Climmie Edwards of New York; children, Derrick (Michaela) Hawthorne of S. C., Tracey (Tracy) Craft of Atmore, Anita Crook and Stacey Thomas, both of Bay Minette, Ala., Chrystal Colman of N.Y. and Climmie Jackson of Baldwin County, Ala.; two step-daughters, Tekeesha Hawthorne of Atmore and Trevor (Anson) McElderry of Dothan, Ala.; four brothers, Charles Phillips and Clyde #Edwards, both of N. Y., Ricky Phillips of Detroit, Mich. And Christopher Edwards of Ga.; four sisters, Carolyn (Charles) Scott and Barbara Finklea of Fla., Cydell (Auddie) Simmons and Constance (Clarence) Edward of N.Y.; four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, twelve grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.; devoted and dedicated niece, Belinda Norman and two loving and devoted friends, Derrick and Tracie Brooks, all of Atmore; host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday,, July 15, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Second Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Joe L. Hayes, Pastor and Pulpit Conductor officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers and flower bearers were family and friends.

Charles Bryant Jackson, II

Mr. Charles Bryant Jackson, II, age 58, of Mobile, Ala., passed away recently. He was born to Charles Jackson and Sarah Jackson in Plateau, Ala. He was a Catholic and United with Our Mother of Mercy Parish, although he was a quiet man, his devotion spoke for him. He attended McGill Toolen High School, Most Pure Heart of Mary, and Davidson High School, where he was an avid basketball player.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his daughter, Shakeithia (Kee-Kee) Carson; two sons: Charles Bryant (Big O) Carson and Charles Bryant Pettway; three other children: Kenya, DaRelle and Marco Carson; mother, Mrs. Sarah Jackson; the mothers of his children, Crystal Carson and Dora Pettway; grandchildren, Jalen Miguel, Jaden Tiara and Charlazia Carson, Amaya, Cairo and Charles Pettway, Jr.; five sisters: Jackie Jones, Felicia (William) Thompkins, Maria (Douglas) Gaines, Veronica Morgan and Valerie (Timothy) Jones; four brothers, Frank Jackson, Joseph (Smita) Jackson, Marc (Dr. Royshunda) Jackson and Carlos (Patrice) Williams; devoted aunt, Lucy Mae Pickett; devoted neighbor, Bernice “Bonnie” McCovery; friends, Wendell Lafitte, Carliss Hinton, Mike Batain, Orlando “Boot” Oliver and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at noon at Mobile Baptist Sunlight Auditorium, Prichard, Ala. with Pastor Joseph F. Johnson presiding Eulogist Pastor of the Mount Hebron Church Ministries.
