Escambia County High’s Blue Devils continue to struggle to find a groove as they dropped a 15-0 decision to Excel High on Monday, March 18.
Excel took control of the game right off the bat.
Panthers Josh Gandy and Sean Boatwright both put up doubles to drive in first-inning runs as Excel jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Devils struggled to regain mound control, and the dam broke during the second inning. Excel added 10 runs to its lead in the second frame, and ECHS didn’t have an answer for the tough opponent.
The Panthers pitchers didn’t give up a hit over the first three innings.
Jabrice Hooks broke up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a single that turned out to be the only ECHS hit of the contest.
Gandy pitched four innings for Excel, striking out eight while walking just one and allowing the lone hit.
One bright spot for the young Blue Devils came in the field, where they didn’t commit any errors.
Devontae Johnson started on the mound for the Blue Devils and was roughed up by the Excel batting order. Johnson struck out three but surrendered all 15 runs over three innings of work.
The Blue Devils will reorganize over spring break and will travel to meet Williamson at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2.
