Shocking experiments

Lilly Joiner and Savanna Nelson work on their project

Students in Mrs. Coleman’s fourth-grade science class at Perdido Elementary experimented with electricity recently.
In this inquiry activity, they tested four different ways to connect a battery, wires, and light bulbs to see which ways worked to complete a circuit. Students then had to use their understanding of electrical properties to choose appropriate materials to design and build their own basic circuit switch. Finally, students built a conductivity tester to determine whether different objects are conductors or insulators.
Through this lab, students gained an understanding of the difference between electrical conductors and insulators, and experience recognizing a conductor by its material properties. They are also able to compare conductors and insulators based on their capabilities for electron flow.
