The Bessemer Academy Rebels handed the Escambia Academy Cougars their second loss of the season this past Friday, Sept. 28. The Cougars couldn’t hold on and lost the bout 31-7.
“We were off to a good start in the first quarter but we just couldn’t get anything going after that and didn’t play well the rest of the game,” Head Coach Hugh Fountain said after the game.
After receiving the opening kickoff, EA was forced to punt after a 3 and out. Roughly 4 minutes passed and Daughtry McGhee intercepted the ball and gave the Cougars the ball back. A short drive down the field ended with Pat McGhee scoring EA’s only touchdown of the night from 5 yards out with 6:41 left in the first. Sam Martin added on the point after and it was 7-0.
Towards the end of the quarter, Bessemer answered with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Austin Clarke. After this, the Rebels scored 2 more rushing touchdowns in the second quarter each from 15 yards out and 61 yards out. Both were by running back Justin Jones.
Austin Clarke added the last touchdown in the third from 26 yards out. Jackson Stewart kicked a 38-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter and that was the last score by either team. Despite the bad night offensively and defensively, EA had an interception and a fumble recovery.
The Cougars look to bounce back and get back in the win column this Thursday at Hopper Academy. Go, Cougars!
