No arrest made in shooting

Escambia County Sheriff’s Office investigators are still looking for the person or persons responsible for the murder of a 20-year-old Atmore man who was shot and killed inside his car last Wednesday night (April 26).

The victim, Donta Demorris Russell of a Patterson Street address, was shot several times. The first shot reportedly caused him to lose control of his vehicle, and the shooter or shooters then reportedly fired several more shots into his body after the car crashed into the yard of a home on Old Ship Circle.

ECSO Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said last week that deputies were sent to an address off Martin Luther King Drive, just outside the city limits of Atmore, around 10:16 p.m. after a caller reported a possible domestic disturbance that included gunshots.

Deputies arrived to find a Crown Victoria that was partially off the road and in a yard, resting against a tree. Lawmen noted “obvious gunshot wounds” to the driver, who was the vehicle’s only occupant.

An ambulance and an Atmore Fire Department unit were called to the site, and medics pronounced Russell dead at the scene.

According to law enforcement sources, at least one person has been questioned by ECSO investigators in connection with Atmore’s first murder of the year.
